The Detroit Historical Society is seeking an Accounts Payable and Cash Receipts Accountant to join their finance team. When you join the Society, you will be part of a team whose mission is to tell Detroit's stories and why they matter. This is a hybrid role located in Detroit's cultural district.
Founded in 1921, the Detroit Historical Society has been bringing together diverse voices and communities around the stories of the region to find their place in the present and inspire the future for almost 100 years. The Detroit Historical Society administers and develops exhibitions and programming for the Detroit Historical Museum, the Dossin Great Lakes Museum, and our Collection Resource Center at Historic Ft Wayne.
As an Accountant, you will be responsible for managing the accounts payable process and processing cash receipts. You will also play a key role in maintaining accurate financial records and supporting the company's overall financial operations.
The ideal candidate will have strong communication and interpersonal skills, a solid understanding of accounting principles, and the ability to work independently and meet deadlines.

Key Responsibilities:
- Manage the accounts payable process, including verifying that all invoices have been properly approved and reconciling vendor statements
- Develop and propose improvements to all accounts payable processes, including working with staff to implement the Financial Edge NXT Expense Management System
- Resolve any discrepancies or issues with vendor invoices
- Assists with the development of standard operating procedures and processing documents for all areas of accounts payable
- Maintain accurate financial records and support the overall financial operations of the company
- Record cash receipts in the DHS donor platform – Altru
- Perform AP-related fiscal year-end duties
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or a related field
- 3+ years of experience in an accounts payable role
- Nonprofit experience is a plus
- Experience with Financial Edge and Altru, a plus.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Ability to travel between the three locations
- Certification as a Certified Accounts Payable Associate (CAPA) from the Institute of Financial Operations is a plus.
