SUMMARY:
This position is responsible for maintaining a quality ice surface through scheduled resurfacing and other assigned ice maintenance that is consistent with MPRB mission, values, goals, and comprehensive plan. This work is accomplished in ensuring that the needs and interests of diverse communities are met while exhibiting cultural proficiency in meeting the needs and interest of underserved and under-represented communities.
Scheduled hours are primarily nights and weekends, including holidays
WHAT YOU'LL DO:
- Responsible for ice resurfacing, ice edging and overall ice quality.
- Perform various general maintenance functions for equipment, grounds as directed, exercising adequate judgment to ensure completion of tasks as assigned.
- Assist in maintaining, cleaning and safety checking all rinks, locker rooms, bleachers, and areas surrounding as needed.
- Monitor all activities at the arenas to ensure the safety of the public and other staff.
- Monitor all refrigeration equipment, keep necessary records and log books on equipment, and inform the Ice Arena Manager if systems or equipment is malfunctioning.
- Assist MPRB in identifying and addressing the park and recreation needs of underserved and under-represented communities.
WHAT TO BRING:
Need to Have:
- High School degree or equivalent (GED).
- Experience operating ice resurfacing equipment: six (6) months.
- Valid Driver's License.
Nice to Have:
- Experience with Ice Edger Equipment.
- Experience sharpening skates.
- Mechanical aptitude and experience in using large equipment.
Skills Crucial to Success in This Role:
- Knowledge of applicable work hazards and safety precautions.
- Knowledge and understanding of best practices with ice surfacing equipment operation and ice edging.
- Knowledge of hand and mechanical tools and equipment.
- Outstanding customer service principles, practices and standards for a diverse customer base.
- Be able to work a varying schedule. Scheduled hours are primarily nights and weekends, including holidays.

Selection Process:

What steps the selection process involves:
- We review your minimum qualifications.
- We rate your training and experience based on application materials and supplemental questions (30%).
- We conduct a structured panel interview (oral exam) (70%).
- We calculate your civil service score based on the above components and place you on the eligible list if all testing components are passed (passing score for each component and as an overall score is 70.00 or above). Eligible list will expire in three (3) months.
- We refer the top finalists to the hiring manager for an interview.
- References, including verification of employment, past performance and discipline may be considered.
- We conduct a background check. Upon receiving a conditional offer of employment, the applicant will be asked to sign an informed consent allowing the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board to obtain their criminal history in connection with the positions sought. - Upon receiving a conditional offer of employment, applicants will also need to successfully pass a pre-employment physical examination paid for by the MPRB.
