The Vice President of Risk Management is responsible for overseeing the strategic management and implementation of the commercial insurance program (other than employee benefits) for the organization. This position identifies and evaluates the company’s exposure to loss or damage to physical assets, potential liability, etc. The Vice President will be responsible for compiling, analyzing, and preparing data in order to develop and recommend policies, processes and procedures to company leadership that is intended to minimize exposure to risk for the organization. As the Vice President of Risk Management, this position will be the primary liaison and representative of the company when working with insurance adjusters, legal counsel, brokers, underwriters, etc.

Critical Duties:
  • Evaluates insurance coverage, makes recommendations of coverage and retentions to management, negotiates placement of policies, and ensures appropriate policies are in effect.
  • Ensures proper and accurate data collection, determination of replacement cost, applications, other documents, etc. needed for insurance placement.
  • Provides guidance to executive management team as the knowledge expert on insurance related matters.
  • Provides support, education, and training to others to build risk awareness, and acts as an advisor to operations on compliance matters, including Fair Housing, American Disabilities Act (ADA), etc.
  • Review contracts for appropriate contractual risk transfer and insurance requirements.
  • Provide development team with insurance cost evaluation of proposed developments.
  • Participates in risk analysis for potential acquisitions and dispositions.
  • Analyzes and reviews claims involving the company and its employees.
  • Recommends action on claims to executive management, operational leadership, and supports legal counsel in lawsuits as appropriate, including, but not limited to: Assisting executive management and operational leadership in the determination of any loss accruals or financial statement disclosure.
  • Collaborates with Safety Officer in loss control.
Essential Duties (Other Duties May Be Assigned):
  • Day to day responsibilities include, but not limited to: upkeep of various insurance programs including incident review, reporting claims, audits, allocations of premiums, etc.
  • Identification of new opportunities to lower the total cost of risk.
  • Create projects designed to assist others within the organization to affect cost reductions of risk.
  • Review and analyze operational and marketing activities to make recommendations to accomplish desired risk management goals.
  • Oversee preparation of resident communications and Release and Settlement Agreements.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
  • Carries out supervisor responsibilities, including interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning assigning and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
  • Maintain daily contact with staff to ensure completion of work, update on work progress, reassess assignments and prioritize work assigned if necessary.
  • Provide staff with additional training and career development opportunities.
  • Conduct weekly team meetings and disseminate important operational and company information as needed and/or directed.

Education/Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Risk Management preferred.
  • 10+ years of practical work experience in a Risk Management, insurance company or property/casualty insurance brokerage environment.
Certificates/Licenses:
  • ARM or CRM Preferred
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
Knowledge of:
  • Microsoft Office Suite

  • Excel
Skill in:
  • PC Literate – Microsoft Office Products
  • Communicate effectively, both verbal and written, with internal and external customers.
