Your responsibilities
Within RWEST’s Commercial Analysis and Global Strategies department, strategic market analysis is responsible for all long-term analysis, modelling and price forecasts . Our insights cover forecasts and scenarios for inputs (macroeconomics, energy demand, (fossil) fuel and carbon markets, investment cost and technological change, emissions targets & regulation), long-term modelling and price forecasting for electricity and hydrogen.
RWE will benefit from de-carbonisation, renewables expansion and technological change with further investments into future technologies such as Renewables, Electrolysers and (Hydrogen or CCS-ready) gas generation.
To support RWE’s investment plans and growth strategy for the US, your responsibility is to set-up a new, US-based long-term modelling team in order to cover important US electricity or energy markets with in-house modelling and forecasts. You will be based in Austin or in Chicago in our office premises (remote working from home under our hybrid working model possible) and report into the Head of Strategic Market Analysis being located in our headquarter in Europe.

  • Develop US long-term modelling team; support teambuilding and recruiting
  • Establish fundamental, long-term electricity models for the relevant US growth markets such as ERCOT, Eastern Interconnect (in particular PJM, NYISO, NE ISO) and Western Interconnect (in particular CAISO)
  • Consider specific characteristics with regard to market fundamentals, policy and electricity market design, and translate it into model code
  • Collect detailed expert knowledge from operating teams, filter relevant information apply it to long-term electricity market models
  • Closely collaborate with the Head of Strategic Market Analysis to assure that overarching or global long-term modelling concepts and assumptions are in line with established RWE principles
  • Jointly communicate findings with your team to main stakeholders such as Commercial Analysis, Strategy, Regulatory Affairs, Controlling and Finance within North America and on Group level
  • Ensure that US forecasts and modelling results are understood and consistently applied across the RWE group and discuss implication with stakeholders and the Head of Strategic Market Analysis

Your profile

  • University Degree in Engineering, Economics, Finance, Mathematics, Physics or equivalent. An advanced degree with electricity market focus is a plus.
  • Work experience in (long-term) electricity market modelling and analysis, including experience with production cost-based modelling tools such as PLEXOS, PROMOD, UPLAN, or similar mathematical programming languages like GAMS
  • Very strong quantitative and analytical skills (transfer of algorithms into model conduct)
  • Ability to transfer knowledge between analysis and decision makers in other departments with an interdisciplinary approach
  • Experience in interfacing with databases, programming and data visualisation software (SQL, R, Python, Tableau)
  • First experience in leading teams or people or ability to lead and to motivate others
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to condense model results into presentations for different groups of stakeholders
  • Business fluent in English
  • Enthusiastic team player, high level of self-motivation and flexibility, ability to work in a competitive environment and to meet tight deadlines
