Position Description

The Senior Editor works as part of a matrixed team to develop novel online learning experiences for HBS Online, Harvard Business School’s digital learning initiative. This is a 6-month, leave coverage role focused on reviewing and providing feedback on manuscript drafts for courses in development. This role will work closely with Content Developers to continuously improve written content and meet course development milestones.

Duties and Responsibilities Include:

Content Development
  • Review and provide feedback on manuscript drafts for assigned courses in development, assessing dimensions including but not limited to structure, coherence, flow, integration of course materials, explication of course concepts, and design of activities
  • Line-edit manuscripts with a focus on sentence structure and word choice, consistent implementation of in-house style guide directives and course-level style choices, and other editorial elements as needed
  • Mentor Content Developer(s) with a focus on continuous improvement in development processes such as writing and editing
  • Draft (or review) a wide variety of written content, including expository text, scripts for faculty video recordings, question prompts, and exercises
  • Analyze large amounts of existing academic material, synthesize concepts and propose (or provide feedback on proposals for) how they will be integrated into the course
  • Develop cases and expert practitioner stories. Shape the integration of the resulting material into the course
  • Partner with Content Developers and colleagues in creative development to record, edit, and animate video content
  • Provide regular updates to project manager and team
  • May proof and provide QA as needed
  • Complete other duties as assigned

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and 7 years of relevant experience is required.
  • Candidates with a Master’s or advanced degree and a minimum of 4 years of relevant experience may also be considered.

Additional Qualifications and Skills

  • A background in economics/finance/accounting, leadership/strategy or any business-related discipline is preferred
  • Intellectual curiosity, a passion for education, and a collaborative approach to content development
  • Ability to learn and utilize technical abilities of the course platform
Prior work or research experience that demonstrates:
  • Strong editorial and writing skills
  • Skilled at providing feedback on long-form writing; online learning focus a significant plus
  • Capability to identify priorities, balance competing demands, and manage work to deadline
  • Ability to tell a story from disparate pieces of information
  • Attention to detail
  • Facilitation experience
  • Stakeholder management

Additional Information

This position is approved for a 6-month term, which begins on the person's first day of employment.

This role is offered as a hybrid (some combination of onsite and remote) where you are required to be onsite at our Boston, MA based campus several days per month. Specific days and schedule will be determined between you and your manager.
