Position Overview

The Collection Site Attendant located within the Solid Waste Department inspects all incoming loads and helps citizens using the container site for the disposal of solid waste and recyclables. This position ensures only Cumberland County residents use the container site, directs commercial/permitted haulers to correct locations for disposal of debris and maintains the cleanliness of container site.

Examples of Duties

  • Perform semi-skilled and unskilled work for the Container Site division
  • Enforce all container site rules, i.e., no scavenging, amount and separation of debris brought in, and the hours of operation
  • Perform a variety of tasks involved in assisting the public, enforce all site rules, inspect all incoming loads, and assist site users by providing guidance on proper disposal of solid waste and recyclables, answering questions, operating and maintaining solid waste/recycling container sites, and directing traffic to proper areas
  • Responsible for operating and maintaining machinery and equipment to compact garbage, maintain landscaping, perform light custodial work, and pick up trash and litter inside and outside area
  • Maintain cleanliness of site by raking grass and leaves, removing weeds, edging, sweeping, pick up loose debris, clan signs and attendant building

Minimum Qualifications

High school or General Educational Development diploma and five (5) months of experience involving grounds maintenance work and dealing with the public; or an equivalent combination of education experience.

Driving is an essential function of this position. To be considered, you must have a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record. If your driver’s license is from another state, you will be required to obtain and show proof of a valid NC driver’s license within 60 days of hire

Negative drug screen and background check are required

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of the applicable procedures, policies, and laws, materials and equipment related to the maintenance and operation of vehicles and light equipment and grounds maintenance trades
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards of general maintenance or light equipment and grounds maintenance work
  • Skilled in the use and care of a variety of hand and power tools necessary to perform light equipment maintenance and grounds task
  • Ability to understand and follow written and oral instruction
  • Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods of time as required by work assignments
  • Ability exercise tact and courtesy in contact with the general public
  • Ability establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments
