JOB DESCRIPTION
I. JOB TITLE: Pharmacy Technician
II. JOB SUMMARY: Under direct supervision of a registered pharmacist, prepares, packages, and distributes medications; performs clerical duties related to the operation of a pharmacy, and performs other related duties as required.
III. REPORTS TO: Pharmacist-in-charge
IV. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Performs routine tasks related to the filling of prescriptions, including tasks requiring the physical handling, counting, mixing, and packaging of pharmaceuticals. The Technician's work related to the filling of prescriptions must be reviewed and approved by a registered pharmacist.
1. Receives prescriptions and obtains information from patients; determines eligibility for when 340B drugs may be used; determines whether patient has insurance and inputs that information into the patient’s record in the pharmacy computer system.
2. Selects drugs from stock for prescriptions; counts pours or mixes pharmaceuticals; places pharmaceutical products in appropriate containers and affixes labels to containers.
3. Uses pharmacy computer system to enter prescription data for processing new and refill prescriptions, updating patient profiles for pharmacist’s review; performs clerical accounting duties related to billing and eligibility.
4. Resolves billing and eligibility problems using a computer or by calling insurance “help” desks.
5. Answers telephone and takes messages for patient refill requests and related pharmacy business; maintains the pharmacy in a clean and orderly condition; performs data entry for ordering drugs from the wholesaler’s system for both 340B drugs and non-340B drugs
6. Monitors prescription inventory for expired pharmaceuticals; receives and records information for incoming pharmaceuticals; verifies invoices and statements.
7. Maintains registers and reports for control of Schedule 2, 3, 4, 5 drugs.
8. Records cash/charge/check transactions in the cash register; closeout cash register at end of day matching reports generated with days receipts; turn over days receipts to the business office or bank for deposit.
9. Maintains the inventory of over-the-counter medications and related items for sale to patients; advises patients on product information or refers to the pharmacist.
10. Maintains strict confidentiality of patient information consistent with HIPPA guidelines and regulations.
11. Completes other related duties as may be assigned.

VI. QUALIFICATIONS: High School Diploma (required); technician training or experience (desirable); must be a West Virginia Certified Pharmacy Technician, or be in a training program to become certified.
