Unit Mission Statement
The Bursars Office is responsible for student accounting, cashiering, and receivables and collections activities for the university. The office manages billings, collections, deposits and accounts for the revenues. Activities are performed within guidelines established by state and federal regulations and generally accepted accounting principles.

Position Summary
The Cashier is the custodian of a petty cash account for William & Mary and ensures timely receipt and deposit of the university’s incoming revenues. This includes payments for student tuition and miscellaneous receipt billings. Specific responsibilities include (but are not limited to):
  • Provide front-line customer service in operating the teller window assisting students with questions regarding their e-bills and accounts; as well as departments.
  • Reconcile individual drawer reports, prepare settlements, notify the manager of discrepancies; and accurately key deposits into the Cashiering system.
  • Audit departmental deposits to verify the amounts, proper coding, and documentation.
  • Process, load, and balance Express Card transfers to the student ID Express Card.
  • Prepare journal vouchers to properly record transfers in Banner finance.
  • Post payments to student accounts; for departments or grants; and prepare consolidated bank deposits.
  • Travel to the VIMS campus once a week as needed to pick up deposits.
  • Assist with auditing and maintaining records for campus Petty cash accounts.

Required Qualifications
  • High-school diploma or equivalent.
  • Working knowledge of cash handling protocols and procedures.
  • Strong attention to detail and proven ability to perform accurate mathematical calculations.
  • Proficiency with a variety of computer applications including payment systems, web-based applications, and automated accounting programs/systems.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills with a demonstrated customer service orientation.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of FERPA privacy regulations and Touchnet information systems or a similar student payment system.
  • Knowledge of ACH transfers and/or wire transfers.
  • Knowledge of Banner (Finance) or a similar oracle-based financial system.
  • Demonstrated banking experience as a Teller or in a closely related banking position.
  • Holds a valid U.S. driver’s license.
