Department: Gas Operations
Job Statement:
Assists in maintaining and monitoring cathodic protection of the natural gas system and in collecting and recording field data as required to meet the Department of Transportation’s pipeline safety guidelines. Receives work assignments from and submits work to Corrosion Technician II.
Essential Duties:
- Inspects rectifier and anode corrosion protection systems to minimize corrosive effects of discharge between gas pipelines and ground and other structures.
- Using a voltmeter/multi-meter measures pipe-to-soil voltage potentials used for cathodic protection of coated steel natural gas mains and services.
- Identifies, records, and reports pipe-to-soil readings, especially those that fall below standard as required by the Department of Transportation’s Office of Pipeline Safety.
- Assists corrosion technician(s) in troubleshooting and maintaining galvanic anode and rectifier systems.
- Assists corrosion technician(s) in installing sacrificial anodes on unprotected or inadequately protected pipelines.
- Performs occasional facility locates for design and/or site excavation.
- Assists construction crews in clearing electrical shorts within the gas system.
- Promotes positive company image through good customer relations and professional, prompt service.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements:
Education/Training/Certifications: High school diploma or equivalent required; degree or certificate in electrical/electronic technology from technical/trade school preferred (military training acceptable). Must be able to read, write, and perform basic mathematical computations.
Experience/Skills: Electrical experience, prior pipeline construction and computer experience preferred.
Equipment: Company vehicle, voltmeter/multi-meter, locating equipment, hand tools, 2-way radio, and computer (to access mapping applications such as GT Viewer).
Physical Demands/Environmental Conditions: Outside work possibly in extreme weather conditions. Long work hours possibly during emergency situations. Extensive walking while carrying up to 50 lbs.
Other: Current Alabama Driver’s license required. Frequent work in close proximity to high pressure gas facilities and occasionally around blowing gas. Must be able to communicate effectively with co-workers, contractors and with the public.
