Class Title: Automotive & Equipment Mechanic Helper Job Code Number: 14-H-008
Established: Bargaining Unit: Local 1600

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Services automotive equipment; assists journeyman automobile mechanics in the overhaul and maintenance of automobiles, trucks, tractors, and miscellaneous automotive construction equipment; performs related work as required.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Works under the supervision of a Garage Foreman or employee of higher grade who makes work assignments and inspects work for conformance with established standards.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Services automobiles, trucks, motorcycles and automotive construction equipment with gasoline and oil, and checks tires, batteries and radiators.
2. Cleans, washes oils, and greases automotive vehicles and parts.
3. Assists mechanics in the repair of automotive equipment.
4. Independently makes the less complex automotive repairs; makes routine adjustments and replacement of parts.
5. Dismantles automotive equipment preparatory to repairing or replacing worn or broken parts.
6. Cleans and cares for tools and machines.
7. Performs custodial duties by policing and keeping premises clean; answers telephone on afternoon shift.
8. Installs and removes batteries; repairs tires.

MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS:
A. Education equivalent to high school graduation or 12th grade equivalent.
B. At least one (1) year's experience relating to the repair, maintenance, or servicing of automotive equipment.
C. Working knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and standard practices of the automotive mechanic trade.
D. General mechanical ability and skill in making routine mechanical repairs to various parts of automotive equipment.
E. Ability to perform routine servicing, including refueling, lubricating, battery, tire repair, radiator examination, and washing of cars.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT(S):

  • Possession of a valid State of Michigan driver’s license.
  • Ability to obtain a valid State of Michigan CDL with Class A endorsement within one (1) year of appointment.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms.
The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, feel or operate objects, tools or controls. The employee is also frequently required to sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; and talk or hear. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
