Overview
The School of Environmental and Biological Sciences, located on the George H. Cook Campus, is one of the largest schools of Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey. We pursue excellence in research, teaching, and outreach in areas of study that address the biological spectrum from molecules to ecosystems. Our emphasis is on both the fundamental sciences and the social and human dimensions. We offer 21 undergraduate majors, including plant and animal sciences, microbiology, biotechnology, agriculture and food systems, landscape architecture, food and nutritional sciences, ecology and evolution, marine science and oceanography, environmental sciences and meteorology, human ecology, entomology, and environmental economics.
In addition to instruction in the classroom, field, and laboratory, our students have opportunities for experiential learning on and off campus, including a growing emphasis on international experiences through short- and long-term study abroad. Students also have access to a robust program of applied research and outreach hosted by the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station laboratories, farms, business incubators, and marine stations throughout the state.

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking an Assistant Dean II to lead retention efforts for the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences. This position, in consultation with other units at the School and across Rutgers—New Brunswick, develops, refines, and implements a comprehensive holistic, student-centered strategy for growth, retention, and graduation for the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences with special emphasis on issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion. The Assistant Dean is responsible for being vigilant in obtaining a clear understanding of the issues impacting student success and applying current research, methods, and practices to constantly refine and expand retention efforts to ensure that they are inclusive, relevant, practical, and helpful to students. The person in this position is part of a team of advisors in the Office of Academic Programs dedicated to general undergraduate advising and student success.

- Responsible for design and coordination of all broad support and retention aspects of the student journey. This includes the full range of duties associated with academic standing, success and retention initiatives, support systems, coordination with the advising team, with SEBS faculty and staff and university-wide partners.
- Assists with development and implementation of overall SEBS diversity, equity, and inclusion goals, in part by providing expertise and guidance through a data-driven lens to the school administration to formulate programs and structures to support and retain students to graduation. This position works closely with the SEBS Associate Dean of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and serves on school and university committees to guide DEI goal-development and implementation.
- Serves as a member of the Dean’s staff in the Office of Academic Programs to support all office-wide tasks for the SEBS general student population, including providing developmental individual and group advising, managing an advising caseload of first-year students, participating in all large-scale academic programming including APA Day, STAR Day, graduation certification, delay drop/probation advising and other administrative duties including serving on school and university committees as assigned.
- Works in consultation with the Associate Dean to provide guidance to the SEBS faculty Admissions and Scholastic Standing Committee to form, review, and update academic policy to better serve student retention efforts. The Assistant Dean for Retention will serve as an expert to assist the committee in implementing school-wide policies to enhance retention and in the committee’s review of individual students’ situations and appeals for exceptions to academic policy.
- Monitors student compliance with Academic Probation and Warning restrictions, creating a culture of connection to assist students in devising individualized academic plans and making good decisions about manageable course schedules. Provides advising outreach to students to serve major exploration and changing. Provides advising for dismissed students to provide a holistic understanding of their situation and options for resuming academic progress.
- Works closely with the Coordinator of the Student Success Initiative to support and expand the Academic Mentoring and Portals to Academic Study Success programs to support students in academic jeopardy. Develops new initiatives and outreach efforts to support more advanced students in academic jeopardy with those students’ needs in mind and utilizing a variety of modalities as needed to support the students.
- Coordinates with faculty and staff of SEBS and NJAES and university-wide academic departments to identify impediments to student academic progress and develop strategies and programs to support student success. Track student grades and withdrawals in courses with a particular focus on identifying needs and opportunities for student support and retention.
- Coordinates with various University partners (SEBS EOF, Dean of Student, ODS, CAPS, Cultural Collaborative, Student Affairs) to develop, review and enhance the infrastructure to support students struggling with personal, social, emotional, or medical issues impacting their academic progress.
- Collaborates with the SEBS Office of Global Engagement to provide effective outreach, support, and retention efforts for international students.
- Collects, manages, and assesses data to track retention progress, graduation rates, and institutional goals. Create and analyze withdrawal, academic standing, and graduation reports to gauge and modify scholastic standing and retention efforts. Utilize data to create innovative and effective programming and support structures.
- Oversees the Financial Aid Standards of Academic Progress process to assist students with financial aid compliance issues; organizes the SAP process with OAP deans and advisors; tracks students who are on academic plans to provide additional support and resources as they work to regain compliance with federal standards.
- Identifies and advises possible Academic Amnesty candidates, including review and processing of Academic Amnesty requests as well as discussions to guide students who are completing appeals to CSS about academic standing issues and reenrollment.
- Identifies students who have had a gap in enrollment and provide guidance on re-enrollment and pathways to degree completion.

Consistent with the current application of Rutgers Policy 60.3.22, this position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement.

- Requires a Master’s degree and a minimum of 3 years overall professional experience in Higher Education.
