Background on Organization:
Life Pieces To Masterpieces (LPTM) is a non-profit out of school time organization located in Washington, D.C. LPTM works to provide opportunities for Black boys and young men to lead others in discovering our shared humanity. Life Pieces To Masterpieces uses artistic expression and our Human Development System to develop character, unlock potential, and prepare African American boys and young men to transform their lives and communities. Since 1996, we have served more than 1,000 boys and young men, ages 3 to adulthood, and have created more than 1,000 masterpieces.
Job Description:
We have an opening for a full-time position: Legacy (ages 10-13) . Life Pieces To Masterpieces is currently seeking an energetic, creative, and organized educator who demonstrates strong leadership qualities - preferably with experience working with African American youth in urban settings. During the week, the Legacy teacher would teach the 10-13 year-olds in our afterschool program that runs from 3:00-6:00 pm. Teachers will also assist with the organization's Color Me Community workshops and other initiatives.
RESPONSIBILITIES for Legacy Teacher include, but are not limited to:
- Facilitate and model the Life Pieces To Masterpieces curriculum core elements (a combination of our Human Development System and artistic process)
- Create a learning environment that fosters love, security and expression for all
- Write and implement lesson plans while being creative, engaging, and educationally appropriate including hands-on arts-based projects.
- Report on the progress of young men verbally and in written format and communicate this progress to parents.
- Provide homework help and academic support and serve as an advocate for our young men’s success.
- Maintain attendance records.
- Provide oversight and feedback to mentors and volunteers.
- Partake in data collection via surveys and other tools.
- Enforce strict Covid-19 protocols when delivering programming.
- Lead our young men in implementing presentations for stakeholders, including, but not limited to, our families, community members, partners, and donors.
Qualifications:
- Enthusiasm for working with Black boys and young men on their academic, artistic, and personal development
- Strong classroom management skills
- Experience and confidence facilitating dynamic programming
- Experience leading and managing others, including middle and high school aged youth
- Experience working with boys and young men
- Self starter with the ability to work independently and with a team
- Effective communicator with various types of people and professionals
- Bachelor's degree preferred. However, consideration will be given to those with relevant youth development and education experience.
Hours: 40 hours per week
Compensation: $18 - $20 per hour
