Why does the job exist?

The purpose of this position is integral to the operations of the agency and in direct support of the Community Engagement team and execution of the agency's strategic plan. This position exists to engage in meaningful communications regarding key initiatives, solicit youth and community feedback, and to develop and execute a youth engagement program in support of the agency's strategic outreach efforts. This position also exists to plan, coordinate, and execute events to promote engagement with target audiences, in collaboration with the other liaisons on the engagement team. This position will also serve as a liaison to stakeholders and build a coalition on key issues, supporting youth leadership and legislative engagement across New Mexico's schools and communities. A demonstrated commitment to effective engagement, diversity, equity, inclusion, and student success, as well as working with broadly diverse communities statewide (i.e. special education populations, English Language Learners, Indigenous communities, etc.).

How does it get done?

  • Outreach & Resource Creation: Bolster existing engagement relationships between PED and stakeholders and create new effective relationships with youth and community-based organizations across the state. In addition, the Youth Liaison may design and deliver external professional development around school partnership engagement and related best practices and/or provide consultation and technical assistance to LEA leaders, as needed;
- PED Youth Leader Network: Recruit members, plan and execute in-person meetings, monthly webinars, opportunities for feedback and effective engagement training, and regular check-ins; ( Secretary Youth Advisory Cohort: Recruit members that reflect the diversity of the state, plan and execute in- person meetings, monthly webinars, opportunities for feedback and effective engagement, and regular check-ins;
  • PED Networking: Collaborate with PED staff to promote youth engagement as a core practice agency-wide and ensure policies, programs, and practices are aligned and rooted in research that support effective youth engagement models. In addition, the liaison may provide internal training and professional development around youth and community engagement and related best practices;
  • Additional engagement, outreach, and communications tasks, as assigned. Resource Creation: Research effective youth engagement practices and communicate the findings and strategic planning goals to NMPED Divisions and staff. Lead the continuous enhancement of NMPED youth engagement resources, and provide meaningful content for students, families, and communities.

Students, Teachers, Families, educational leaders, external stakeholders {i.e. legislators) and PED staff.

Ideal Candidate

Demonstrated expertise in equitable and effective youth engagement practices, or related school-family partnership activities and practices; successful experience as a K-12 teacher implementing engagement practices, have an anti-bias, anti-racism, anti- oppression orientation to public education services and programs, have a strong understanding of New Mexico's strengths, cultures, languages, and landscape, be bilingual (either Spanish and/or one of the Indigenous languages spoken in New Mexico).

Master's degree in Education, Special Education, Family Studies, or Business Administration preferred.

Minimum Qualification

Bachelor's degree in Education, Public Administration or Business Administration and five (5) years of experience as a teacher and/or program administrator. Substitutions apply. See Substitution Table below.

Employment Requirements

Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico's Driver's License.

Working Conditions

State of New Mexico employees may be impacted by the Public Health Order dated December 19, 2022, which requires facilities licensed or certified by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services ("CMS"), including all hospital types, long-term care facilities, nursing homes, hospice facilities and rehabilitation facilities, as well as assisted living facilities and adult day care settings, to adhere to all COVID-related requirements prescribed by CMS, including, but not limited to masking and staff vaccination.

Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Some sitting, standing, bending and reaching may be required. Some occasional travel is required for meetings and conferences.
