Trauma Performance Improvement Specialist Registered Nurse

Position Summary:
The Trauma PI Specialist supports the Trauma Program’s Performance Improvement and Patient Safety (PIPS) activities, including review of trauma care across the continuum of care, case-finding, and audit of medical records. Provides coordination and facilitation of performance improvement activities, including trending and benchmarking of data outcomes. This role also is responsible for the development, implementation and evaluation of Trauma Injury Prevention and community outreach programs and develops relationships with established program leaders within the community a minimum of 0.2 FTE.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
Under the general supervision of the Trauma Program Manager and Trauma Medical Director, functions to include, but not limited to:
- Performs and / or supervises medical record audits related to various trauma Quality Improvement indicators to identify problems and / or trends in trauma care for referral to providers.
- Responsible for providing feedback to referral hospitals / physicians regarding patient outcomes.
- Regularly attends Trauma Multidisciplinary Peer Review Physician meeting
- Prepares chart reviews and summaries for Trauma Peer Review / Morbidity and Mortality Committee.
- Regularly attends the Trauma Multidisciplinary Systems meetings.
- Develops and assists others in developing action plans and ensures follow through on these plans.
- Facilitates problem and resolution loop closure.
- Assists the Trauma Program Manager and Trauma Registrar:
- Ensure the accuracy and completeness of trauma registry, including data abstraction and data entry.
- Reviews trauma patients’ clinical records across the continuum of care, including EMS reports, ED, surgery, and inpatient records.
- Assists to design and provide structured audits and reports of the registries data validation.
- Make recommendations to improve the process of data collection for the registry and maximize the use of the registry for performance improvement.
- Reports any identified quality issues throughout the trauma program and generated solutions to improve levels of performance.
- Provides coordination and facilitation of Performance Improvement data collection, analysis, trending and benchmarking of data and outcomes.
- Identifies and assists with the coordination and implementation of educational activities for health care professionals, e.g. EMS /Healthcare Symposium, EMS case reviews.
- Promotes guest relations, anticipates and responds to needs of others, provides assistance in courteous and timely manner, treats others with care and respect maintaining privacy, confidentiality and dignity. Maintains a professional appearance and a clean, safe environment.
- Assists with the development and implementation of the Injury Prevention plan, including monitoring of activities and evaluation of outcomes, based on Trauma registry data. Develops contacts within the community and develops a plan tailored to the need of the community, based on registry data and/or requests from the community.
- Assists with coordination and implementation of educational activities for health care professionals.
- Responsible for own professional growth and continued learning. Maintains knowledge of current trauma trends and developments in both injury prevention and performance improvement programs by reading appropriate literature and attending related seminars and internal educational offerings.
- Participates in community events on behalf of the Trauma Service as needed.
- Performs other related job duties as requested.

Qualifications:
Required:
- Current Registered Nurse license in the state of Michigan
- Bachelors Degree in related field
- Five years of recent nursing experience in surgical care, critical care, and/or an emergency department with increasing responsibility and interest in the trauma care
- Current ACLS, BLS, and TNCC
Preferred:
- Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN)
- Experience in quality improvement and patient safety
- TNCC (Trauma Nurse Core Curriculum), PALS, ENPC, ATCN, FCCS, CCRN
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Self directed with excellent communication skills-required
- Analytical ability to organize, record and abstract data form computer systems and patient charts to maintain trauma registry and produce various reports-required
- Able to independently devise and verbalize methods for problem resolution-required
- Must be self-directed, flexible and committed to the team concept-required
- Excellent interpersonal skills to be able to interact effectively with physicians and other staff when gathering information-required
- Computer and internet skills and experience including familiarity and comfort with the Windows and MS Office environment and a wide variety of software applications, e.g. Excel, Access, Word, Powerpoint. Previous experience with a centralized patient information system is required.
