Research Technician IV (Transgenic Animal Core Specialist) is responsible for conducting technical procedures related to Genetically engineered mouse modeling (GEMM) program within Preclinical modeling core. Transgenic core technician will be responsible for the day-to-day technical operation of the transgenic core facility at Fred Hutch. In consultation with the core Director, the technician will execute all standard protocols essential for generating transgenic mouse lines. This position requires flexibility, good communication skills and an extensive background in technical procedures.
Essential Tasks:
Be responsible for the daily operation of the GEMM program to meet research goals and achieve results. The specific tasks include Animal husbandry and maintenance, Embryo handling and manipulation, microinjections, sperm cryopreservation and in vitro fertilization. (60%)- May lead or supervise other laboratory personnel and manage program workflow, schedules and determines priorities to maintain progress on all projects. (10%)
- Participates in hiring and staffing decisions. Leads or assists with training laboratory personnel. (5%)
- Determine the most suitable methods to be used in research; determine appropriate experimental controls. (5%)
- Maintain laboratory notebooks and accurate logs. Record data daily into multiple custom databases, including colony/breeding data, microinjection session data etc. Use software tools like Microsoft Excel, Word, SharePoint etc for data & note gathering, maintenance and sharing. (10%)
- Support the maintenance of samples and laboratory reagents, stocks, media surgical instruments and maintain laboratory equipment (clippers, pipet holders, scope etc.). Process and store specimen samples, and thaw and prepare frozen samples, if needed for implantation. (10%)
Qualifications:
- A Bachelor of Sciences degree in a medical, biological, or allied field.
- 6 years of experience in classical transgenic techniques, sperm/embryo cryopreservation and IVF.
- Experience in performing research using mouse models
- Experience with classical transgenic techniques, pronuclear microinjections, sperm/embryo cryopreservation and IVF
- Microsurgery experience
- Demonstrated ability to lead individual performers in delivering services, ability to learn and adapt to new systems and techniques
- AALAS certification
- >8 years’ experience in performing research using mouse models and/or generating mouse models using CRISPR/Cas9 technology
- Experience in generating mouse models using CRISPR/Cas9 technology
- Experience in ES cell culture and blastocyst microinjection
- Proven records of generating transgenic mouse models
