Position Highlights
The Center for Quantum Networks (CQN), a National Science Foundation-Engineering Research Center at the University of Arizona in the Wyant College of Optical Sciences is seeking an ambitious team member to serve in the role of Testbed Manager with the ability to work collaboratively with experts in quantum optics and atomic physics. As a critical team member, this position works closely with the Directors of the Center to maintain all aspects of integration for the Tucson testbed infrastructure, ensuring all milestones are met. This position will be expected to work across UArizona and the center’s (10+) partner institutions to further manage the project including collaborative work with the Boston testbed. Duties & Responsibilities

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Project manager of the day-to-day operations of the CQN Tucson testbed infrastructure. Lead mid-scale cross campus system integration and ensure all milestones are met.
  • Implement detailed plan to reach milestones, review progress with Testbed faculty lead, and present results to leadership, funders, and Center members.
  • In collaboration with Testbed faculty lead, conduct research on and maintain the operation of all aspects of the testbed including equipment such as superconducting single photon detectors, fiber switches, cryostats, etc.
  • Facilitate integration across all CQN (10+ campuses) research groups and projects to fulfill testbed milestones.
  • Financial management of the Tucson testbed including budget development, equipment purchases, and inventory.
  • Create an inclusive community within the CQN to enhance communication for experimentalists to exchange information by creating systems that may include sharable files, schemes, institutional exchanges, outside of regular events and meetings to further inform the technical goals and parameters of the CQN Testbeds.
  • Review current technologies and collaborate on new techniques and methods with research groups across the CQN to improve and optimize the capability of both the Tucson and Boston testbeds.
  • Create and maintain universal tracking system(s) (i.e. a database) that will be shared across the Center's researchers in order to inventory and manage techniques tried and associated equipment to determine viability for implementation on testbed.
  • Travel may be required to allow for hands on project management of testbed experiments at Center partner institutions.
  • May supervise undergraduate support personnel.
  • Develop and communicate a public-facing narrative about the development of the testbed, its value, and its future potential.
  • Write technical reports for project progress.
  • Write scientific manuscripts and present at scientific conferences to represent the testbed externally.
  • Write grants for supplemental funding to support activities of the testbed and for associated projects.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to communicate effectively with different groups/individuals.
  • Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information.
  • Knowledge of experimental lab environment.
  • Skill in public speaking and presenting information to large technical and non-technical groups.
  • Ability to collaborate with large teams across institutions.
  • Strong written, verbal, and presentation communication skills.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Physics or related discipline required.
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience is required.
  • Demonstrated project management experience.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with system integration in an optical fiber communications setting.
  • Experience working with large teams/projects.
  • Some experience with and exposure to quantum optics and atomic physics is useful, but not required.
  • Experience in budget development and management including respecting restrictions on different sources of funding.
