Carnegie Science Center connects science and technology with everyday life through hands-on science fun. Our visitors explore and interact with robots, investigate the wonders of the human body, and discover river science and animals. Plus, they enjoy engaging astronomy shows in a planetarium, live theater shows, sports challenges and a ropes course, a real submarine, a huge model railroad – and movies on Pittsburgh’s biggest screen! In addition to providing valuable scientific experiences, Carnegie Science Center offers outreach programs that serve Pittsburgh's diverse community. The Science Center is located on Pittsburgh's North Shore along the banks of the Ohio River and is accessible to persons with disabilities.Carnegie Science Center is looking for a Temporary STEM Facilitator who will support the delivery of grant-funded deliverables which align with community engagement efforts. Temporary STEM Facilitators will also deliver innovative and engaging science programming during in person and/or virtual community engagement sessions, classroom programs, family events, summer and holiday camps, workshops, competitions, and events. Facilitate hands-on science activities in a wide variety of science topics to groups of students, families, and community members.
This Temporary Full-Time position is eligible for many of the Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh's many benefits.
This position will run for one year, on the following schedule:
September-May: M,T,TH,F,SAT, off SUN and W, 10:30am-6:30pm
June-August: M-F, 8am-4:30pm
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
- Requires a high school diploma.
- Candidate must have prior experience working with children.
- Preferred experience in informal education, science communications, or classroom education in a changing environment preferred.
- Demonstrates excellent communication skills, ability to work with diverse audiences, have excellent customer service skills, be well organized, able to function effectively in a team environment, and be able to manage a group of students, families, and community members of varied sizes.
- Must have a passion for the values of first-hand engagement with science, and the priority of increasing participants’ interest and involvement in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math).
- Must be engaging, personable, approachable, adaptable, creative, and flexible in solving any problems that arise during a program and/or event.
- Must have a flexible schedule and be able to work Saturdays and evenings as needed.
- Must be able to work independently.
- Must be knowledgeable or able to become familiar with Digital Media Learning, 21st Century Skills, and Connected Learning systems.
- Must be able to work collaboratively with other members of the STEM Education department to develop and refine programs, assemble materials, and perform logistical functions.
- Must be able to lift 50 lbs., stand for more than 30 minutes, must have valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
- Facilitate off-site engagements with students, families, and community members to fulfill predetermined grant deliverables.
- Facilitate and present hands-on STEM lessons and activities, workshops, virtual field trips, virtual experiences, demonstrations, and competition experiences for students, families, and community members both on-site and off-site for STEM events, camps and classes, and programs throughout the year.
- Collaborate with staff and partners to customize STEM curriculum and contribute suggestions and new ideas.
- Remain current on developments in STEM.
- Ensure that experiences are relevant for participants.
- Present accurate information on STEM topics and careers.
- Share enthusiasm about STEM careers and topics.
- Serve as a role model for participants.
- Assemble and facilitate safe handling of equipment and supplies.
- Collect community feedback during off-site community engagement sessions.
- Attend meetings, program outings, and training sessions.
- Manage attendance of participants each day.
- Complete data entry of program information.
- Become familiar with what the Science Center has to offer, especially the STEM Education Department.
- Become familiar with the personnel and operations of the Science Center.
- Strive for excellence in all aspects of job performance. Consistently demonstrate positive work outcomes, modeling successful skills and strategies for colleagues and reports.
- Actively seek professional growth opportunities and keep abreast of new and emerging technologies, techniques, and applications within both the science/technology field and the museum field to grow professionally and to ensure the highest-quality experience for visitors at CSC.

- Provide “front line” support, as needed, over the course of the year during times of peak visitation (e.g. summer camps, holidays, special events, STEM competitions, etc.)
- Maintain basic departmental responsibilities (timely email, phone, communication; calendar management; regular availability for meetings between 8:00am and 4:00pm Monday – Friday); etc.
- Perform other activities as required by your supervisor.
