General Summary

Employees in the certified occupational therapy assistant (COTA) position at Michigan Career and Technical Institute (MCTI) complete or assist in a variety of professional assignments to carry out supports under the guidelines of the ADA and Rehabilitation Act of 1973 for MCTI students. The focus of the position includes providing accommodations for students in testing and remediation classes, in trade training, and in employment situations. Self-management, disability management, and independent living skills training are also taught to increase success both in training at MCTI and in future employment. This position also includes statewide responsibilities and serves as a recognized resource for businesses and vocational rehabilitation counselors for ADA Accessibility Guidelines, ergonomics, work injury prevention training, disability awareness training, and assistive technology training and support. All activities are performed under the direction of an Occupational Therapist.

Education

Possession of an entry level degree in occupational therapy assistant from an accredited college; this may be an associate’s degree. Possession of State of Michigan licensure in good standing.

Position Responsibilities

Assists Occupational Therapist with providing occupational therapy remediation, habilitation, rehabilitation, and compensatory approaches under the guidance of an occupational therapist to those whose ability to complete tasks of independent living, essential job functions, and learning, are threatened or impaired by developmental disabilities, physical challenges, emotional, psychological, and social challenges, and the challenges of transition youth who may have never been taught the skills necessary for successful employment. Focus on basic and advanced ADL skills and the student’s ability to successfully participate in vocational training in anticipation for integrated competitive employment.

Trains individual in learning and employment strategies in the form of therapeutic activities graded to fit the individuals physical and cognitive needs.

Uses activities such as job skills, work situations, independent living skills to evaluate and improve individual’s level of independent functioning.

Assists with coordinating the occupational therapy goals and education with other team members, including program managers, instructors, counselors, and nursing.

Confers with other team members and key vocational rehabilitation professionals regarding the needs or challenges of the individual, goals for success in training, and progress made.

Assists and consults with the student training program of the facility to aid students in optimizing their work environment to increase independence, efficiency, and productivity in cooperation with the Occupational Therapist.

Participates in the in-service training and development of the service staff and other facility staff.

Requisitions and maintains supplies and equipment needed for assessment, training and treatment, focusing on equipment and strategies that are reasonable both in training and in employment settings.

Collects and maintains program data necessary to meet program reporting and evaluation requirements, and the goals of the agency under the direction of an Occupational Therapist.

Consults with vendors, community rehabilitation organizations, and other rehabilitation professionals.

May assist in research efforts of the service or facility staff.

Performs related work as assigned.

Requirements and Skills

· Advanced knowledge of principles and practices of occupational therapy.

· Knowledge of strategies used for education, training, and employment for individuals who are mentally ill, cognitively impaired, socially awkward or incompetent, have significant sensory impairments and/or are physically disabled.

· Skilled in the use of adapted equipment such as assistive technology in the form of computers or low-tech options like organization strategies or pen and paper planners. Skilled in the ability to train others in the use of adapted equipment.

· Ability to collaborate with and gain the cooperation of clients, businesses, students, and team members of other disciplines.

· Ability to provide instruction and evaluate process in selected tasks of self-care, disability management, training tasks, and essential work tasks to restore, reinforce, and enhance performance, to diminish or correct pathology, and to promote and maintain employment.

· Ability to devise work projects from available materials.

· Ability to work with professionals and other personnel in the work being performed including MRS home offices, MCTI classrooms, businesses, and community partners and providers.

· Ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to machines and equipment as needed.

· Ability to maintain records, prepare reports and correspondence related to the work with varying audiences.

· Ability to communicate effectively with others in multiple formats including written and verbal, individual discussions, small groups, and large audience presentations.

· Ability to maintain favorable public relations including working with businesses, instructional staff, MRS counselors and staff, MCTI students and their families, community resource organizations, and community partners.

· Adequate computer literacy to efficiently and effectively produce reports and maintain records using multiple programs including Microsoft Office, MiBRS, AWARE, and others as needed.

· Excellent time management skills; will be required to manage time and resources while working on many different tasks, projects, and activities.

· Sensitivity and awareness in working with individuals with disabilities.

· Knowledge and understanding of MI Worker’s Compensation and Auto No-Fault Laws, the Americans with Disabilities Act and ADA Accessibility Guidelines, ergonomics work place accommodations, work injury prevention, assistive technology, job and task analysis, work risk analysis, MRS policy, and WIOA guidelines. Assist with the supervision of level II occupational therapy students.

· Excellent written and oral communication skills.

· Detail-oriented with ability to keep accurate and comprehensive records.

· Team-oriented.
