Under the Train Performance & Automation group, the LOCOTROL® group of Engineers design and develop new and exciting solutions for a variety train control requirements. Our automated, semi-automated, and remote-control solutions and products are used globally for a wide variety of freight rail transportation customers; hauling everything from raw metallurgical ore to the very car you drove to work this morning.
The Systems Engineer will utilize experience and expertise to develop and execute objectives for self and others, as well as provide technical solutions, through Embedded Software Applications, for a myriad of customer requests. The ideal candidate for this position will be proficient in all aspects of the systems engineering process, will have direct and significant experience designing and testing complex systems, and coordinating teams of technical personnel.
Essential Responsibilities:
- Serve as Systems Engineer in the development, integration, fielding and operational support of various systems within the LOCOTROL® Technologies product line.
- Perform functional analysis, timeline analysis, detail trade studies, requirements allocation and interface definition studies to translate customer requirements into hardware and software specifications
- Conduct project lessons learned, failures investigations, root cause analysis and implement corrective actions and/or drive improvements to reduce/avoid future recurrences
- Interface with the other disciplines (e.g., hardware, software, test, program leaders, locomotive manufacturers, etc.) to provide technical expertise and ensure proper coordination of the various projects and associated timelines
- Manage and track multiple projects/priorities while maintaining a focus on common project goals
- Develop technical documentation for both internal and external customers, including specifications, installation documents, users manuals, schematics, diagrams, etc.
- Travel, possibly globally, to support contract obligations, as required.
- Work closely with the commercial and technology teams to create system configurations differentiated in the market.
- Leverage cross-functional and cross business resources to maximize technical results.
- Build solid relationships with key customers and suppliers.
Qualifications/Requirements:
- A Bachelor’s, or higher, Degree from an accredited college or university in an Electrical Engineering or Software Engineering major.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience with specification generation for Embedded Software Solutions, requirements management tools, and trace system requirements.
- Ability to work in a cross-functional, global environment.
- Outstanding verbal and written communication skills, with the capability to prepare advanced technical documentation and closely collaborate with personnel, leadership, and customers.
- Outstanding time management and organization skills, with the capability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
Desired Characteristics:
- Ability to develop Failure Modes / Effects Analyses and perform risk assessments.
- Experience with DOORs and/or other requirements management and traceability tools.
- Experience with Configuration Management tools (PLM systems, Source Code Repositories, change management systems)
- Railroad industry experience.
- Experience with Locomotive interfaces and HW platforms.
- Experience with Railroad communications systems.
