Overview:

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is the largest US Department of Energy science and energy laboratory, conducting basic and applied research to deliver transformative solutions to compelling problems in energy and security.


We are seeking a Software Developer who will support the Mission Applications Group in the Nuclear Nonproliferation Division of the National Security Sciences Directorate. Our team is involved in the development and deployment of technology influencing nuclear energy, global security, medicinal research, space exploration, and more. We partner with organizations and subject matter experts to create software solutions to help solve complex problems that have influence across the globe.


Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Develop and maintain web, desktop, and/or mobile applications, primarily using a Microsoft technology stack.
  • Lead and collaborate on efforts to analyze and understand complex and often scientific needs, requiring effective communication of technical ideas with non-technical audiences.
  • Exercise creative and analytical thinking with diverse and multidisciplinary groups to envision optimal software solutions.
  • Utilize standard coding techniques and conventions and pursue their improvement.
  • Ensure delivered applications meet or exceed user expectations and are quality proven.
  • Successfully estimate time-to-completion for projects, bugs, and tasks in familiar domains.


Basic Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree and a minimum of 5 years experience. A combination of education and experience may also be considered.
  • Experience with full-stack development utilizing C#, ASP.NET, .NET Core, Microsoft SQL Server, and client-side browser scripting (Javascript, TypeScript, etc.).
  • Experience with application lifecycle management tools (preferably Git and Azure DevOps).
  • Understanding of object-oriented programming and the ability to write performant, maintainable code following industry OOP standards.
  • Knowledge of client and server-side software technologies.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience using the MVC pattern.
  • Experience developing WPF applications using the MVVM pattern.
  • Experience developing Web APIs.
  • Experience with mobile development.
  • Familiarity with additional languages and technologies not previously mentioned.
  • Graphical and/or usability experience.
  • Experience using Telerik controls.
  • Familiarity with DevOps and CI/CD tools, particularly Octopus Deploy, Team City, and Azure DevOps.
  • Familiarity with cloud-based infrastructure.
  • Experience working on a team adhering to Agile methodology practices.
  • Ability to set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to changing needs.

Q or L clearance:This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
