Job Title: Shift Manager


Reports to:
Multi-unit Manager
Classification: Full-time, hourly
Wage: $21/hour + tips


What's the job?

In this role, you and your fellow Shift Managers (SMs) will serve as the primary on-shift managers, ensuring an excellent guest experience along with providing excellent support and training for the FOH team. You will lead shifts, ensuring that tasks are completed and goals are met, while escalating any issues as needed to the MUM.


You will demonstrate a complete understanding of G&B and GGET values and standards, including the 10 Principles of Customer Service, as outlined in the Company’s training documents. You will be accountable for maintaining a positive work environment and ensuring fair and consistent treatment of all staff.


Key Responsibilities

    Train and develop team-level employees to deliver the GGET experience

    • Identify skill gaps and development areas for the team

    • Provide coaching/training on 10 principles of service

    • Train team and hold accountable to coffee knowledge and preparation standards

    • Provide effective coaching and model healthy feedback standards

    Take accountability for shop-level goals created with MUM

    • Contribute to daily/weekly/monthly sales goals

    • Execute training goals to build a bench of future shift managers

    • Achieve “A” on QC reports

    Own the hospitality experience for all guests and team members

    • Ensure safe food handling

    • Create a welcoming environment

    • Provide coaching/training on 10 principles of service

    • Celebrate team success

    Act autonomously as person-in-charge and manage up to GM when escalation is required

    • Perform assigned administrative duties such as cash handling and ordering

    • Lead shifts: assign positions, manage breaks, delegate tasks, TIP/TOP

    • De-escalate guest and employee situations that require manager intervention

    Ensure facilities are sound and operational

    • Ensure regular preventative maintenance is performed

    • Take action on QC results

    • Ensure a safe work environment

    • Manage up to MUM when outside vendors are required


Other Job Duties

  • Be kind, engaging, and knowledgeable about our offerings and about coffee generally

  • Offer feedback and action steps to assist in team improvement

  • Manage inventory and ordering systems

  • Hold staff accountable for quality control of product, recipes, equipment operation and maintenance

  • Demonstrate proficiency in all roles of the shop

  • Replenish inventory or make proper substitutions for pars

  • Proactively pass on CS knowledge to new staff

  • Coach and empower team members to take ownership of each customer’s experience

  • De-escalate high-intensity customer interactions

  • Address facility issues and implement preventative maintenance

  • Check your Slack communications at the start and end of every shift and interface as necessary with other teams/locations

  • Coach other team members in time management, task completion, and intentional operation

  • Participate in staff reviews

  • Act on behalf of the GM when no other leadership is present


Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

  • Understand and implement our 10 Principles of Service, mission, vision and values

  • Apply “owner eyes” to all aspects of the shop

  • Demonstrate mastery of formal staff training, feedback, and shop processes

  • You have demonstrated a keen eye for detail and the bar skills necessary to lead coffee service

  • You have demonstrated the ability to improve the work - and the experience - of the employees around you

  • You are able to manage up, bringing not only problems but also potential solutions, to your manager

  • You share our absolute passion for coffee, food, and hospitality

  • You are able to open and/or close the coffeebar, and posses overall schedule flexibility

  • You have excellent time management and delegation skills

  • You are able to function well in a fast-paced and at times stressful environment


Experiential Qualifications

  • Previous success working on a G&B/GGET team or highly-comparable experience from an outside company

  • Experience working with diverse teams


Physical Requirements, with or without a reasonable accommodation

  • Ability to move about the cafe space frequently throughout shift

  • Ability to operate job related tools, such as espresso machines and coffee brewers

  • Ability to communicate effectively with coworkers and customers

  • Ability to frequently move prep items in bins weighing up to 40lbs

  • Exposure to kitchen environment with hot surfaces
