Overview of Position
We are looking for an experienced fun, motivated, and self-starting individual to join our team as a General Manager, Waltham Taproom. You will be responsible for delivering a consistent and stellar customer experience to all our taproom guests. With careful attention to detail, you will educate, train, and lead our team of Taproom Managers (TMs) and Bartender/Baristas to not only be customer service experts but also beer savvy individuals. In addition to managing the daily taproom and coffeeshop operations, you’ll oversee the cultivation and management of fun and interesting events throughout our taproom and biergarten spaces. Mighty Squirrel is looking for a candidate that is not only enthusiastic and knowledgeable about craft beer, but also wants to grow professionally with Mighty Squirrel well into the future.
The ideal candidate will have top notch communication and management experience and be passionate, committed, relentlessly quality-focused, a good listener, a mentor, and an excellent teammate. This position will report to our Director of Taproom Operations (DTO). You will ideally be able to join our team as soon as possible.

Mighty Squirrel was founded by friends and home-brewers Naveen Pawar and Henry Manice in 2015 and has since expanded distribution of its beers across Massachusetts through its partner Atlantic Beverage. In December 2018 we launched our first brick and mortar brewery and taproom in Waltham where customers can view the entire brewing process start to finish. Job Responsibilities
- Ensure we have well-oiled and consistent taproom operations on all fronts
- Work with the DTO, TMs, and Bartender/Baristas to create detailed SOPs for all aspects of the taproom (beer, coffee, retail)
- Hold all TMs and Bartender/Baristas accountable to taproom operating procedures
- Ensure both taproom opening and closing procedures are performed consistently
- Relentlessly focus on ways to improve customer service, whether in the areas of greeting, interaction, beer education, or processing transactions
- Develop business strategies designed to attract more customers, expand taproom traffic, reduce inefficiencies, and increase profitability
- Maintain a consistently clean and inviting environment in which guests feel welcome, while keeping a laser focus on customer experience
- Calmly and respectfully handle difficult issues that may arise from either internal staff or customers
- Work across channels with the Sales team, Marketing team, and Production team to plan, organize, market, and execute events
- Work closely with the Marketing team to help build key community partnerships
- Coordinate beer tours and train TMs and Bartender/Baristas to conduct them while communicating the company’s story, beer, and ethos
- Hire, onboard, train, supervise, manage, and schedule bartenders as well as TMs
- Work with the Marketing team and Production team to help coordinate beer releases
- Ensure a clear line of communication from the Bartenders to the DTO in which both constructive and positive feedback can be expressed and heard
- Ensure all safety protocols are observed in the taproom; train, reinforce and improve a safety culture and attitude in taproom operations
- Oversee tracking and recording key measurements in the taproom (labor, sales, inventory, shrinkage, etc.)
- Monitor and approve payroll records
- Initiate and run staff meetings and trainings on a consistent basis, as well as unplanned meetings when necessary
- Work with the Marketing team to utilize social media to promote the taproom and its features, as well as events and new beer releases
- Work with the Marketing team to maintain and develop taproom marketing collateral
- Ensure all staff pass the Cicerone® Certified Beer Server Exam
- Ensure all staff are trained/certified in conjunction with all Massachusetts and Federal regulatory legal requirements
- Perform consistent and frequent staff training on beer profiles, style history, sensory notes, etc.
- Ensure all staff are fully trained on Mighty Squirrel’s history, values, and company ethos
- Represent Mighty Squirrel at industry technical events, conferences, and marketing events
- Set and maintain appropriate food service standards for any food vendors on the premise
- Work with food partners to help ensure the best possible food service to customers in our taproom
- Ensure draft equipment is routinely cleaned and serviced
- Conduct performance reviews with all direct reports
- Perform preventative maintenance on facility and equipment
- Update and maintain POS terminals
Qualifications
- Out of this world communication skills
- Strong organizational skills and ability to multi-task
- A love for working non-traditional hours outside of your standard 9-5, including nights weekends and some holidays
- Ideally at least five years of experience managing a taproom/bar/restaurant
- In depth knowledge of the craft beer industry and emerging trends
- Previous event management experience is ideal
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, juggle conflicting priorities, and consistently maintain high quality output
- Excellent time management and delegation skills
- Organized, detail-oriented, and attentive to quality and standards
- Confident, team-oriented management style
- Must have Cicerone Certified Beer Server Certification and TIPS Certification, or attain the certifications quickly after joining the team
- Ability to lift 55 lbs. and move up to 165 lbs. using traditional methods
- All candidates must have and maintain an acceptable driving record and pass a pre‐employment background check
- Able to work any taproom position as necessary and help out wherever needed in the entire business from time to time depending on the company’s needs
