The Alaska Department of Administration, Division of Retirement and Benefits is recruiting for a Retirement and Benefits Specialist 1 located in Juneau!

What you will be doing:

This position serves as the supervisor for the Pre-Retirement and Retirement Processing Units and supervises a total of five Retirement and Benefits Technicians.
Duties include:
  • Supervising a team of technicians in day-to-day operations.
  • Ensuring efficient and consistent staff performance and production standards are maintained.
  • Providing training for new technicians and ongoing training to current team members.
  • Counseling members on benefit availability, the timing of elections, benefits provided by the Health and Life Plans, and the claim and appeals processes, as well as other issues related to the plans and member decisions regarding options.
  • Performing complex calculations for JRS retirements, increases and EPORS adjustments.
  • Completion of the Weekly Retirement Comparison report and weekly Outstanding Retirement report along with monthly reports for the Disability, Pension Adjustments and Survivor sections.
  • Reviewing and certifying COLA actions, beneficiary Last Checks, Back to Work (BTK) and Optional life insurance adjustments, for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with plan guidelines

The Pre-Retirement and Retirement Processing Units process benefits for members of the Public Employees’ Retirement System (PERS) and Teachers’ Retirement System (TRS), National Guard and Naval Militia Retirement System (NGNMRS), Unlicensed Vessel Personnel Annuity Retirement Plan (UVPARP), Judicial Retirement System (JRS), Elected Public Official Retirement System (EPORS), and the Defined Contribution Plans. This position provides in-depth knowledge and supervision for all of these units.

The successful candidate should possess some or all the following desired knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Working knowledge of statutes, regulations, health and life insurance contracts, plan documents, and bargaining unit agreements.
  • Working knowledge of calculations involving fractions, decimals, and percentages.
  • Ability to counsel employees, retirees, employers, union officials and others on retirement or benefits matters.
  • Ability to organize, evaluate, and present information clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain a favorable working relationship with a wide variety of individuals.
  • Ability to use PC/ Business applications systems to input and retrieve information.

Minimum Qualifications

One year of experience as a Retirement and Benefits Technician 2 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.
OR
A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college.
OR
Two years of experience as a Human Resource Technician 2, PFD Technician 3, Administrative Assistant 2, Insurance Licensing Examiner 3, Accounting Technician 2, or Accountant 1 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.
