The goal of Karis’s programs is to help our neighbors without homes improve overall well-being by developing long-term positive relationships, finding meaning through education and employment, establishing safe and stable housing, and improving mental and physical health. These programs include:
· Street Outreach Program (SOP)—centered on our drop-in center
· The House—a ten-bed emergency teen shelter
· Transitional Living Program (TLP)—transitional housing for up to two years
· Zoe House— a five- bed program for youth made homeless by intimate partner violence
· Bonnie’s House—five-bed, shared, permanent housing project
· Laurel House—thirty-four single-bedroom apartments with extensive services for our community’s most vulnerable youth
· Host Homes
· Asset House – a twelve single room occupancy shared housing program for adults
Job Description
The House is a teen shelter for youths between 13 and 20 years old. The maximum capacity of The House is 10 teens. The Residential Staff member works as an integral part of the House team, which includes the Program Coordinator, Case Manager, Teen advocate, Overnight Staff and volunteers. The House is a 24/7 facility and the Residential Staff member helps cover the day shifts. Residential Staff will provide on-site supervision; ensure the safety and cleanliness of the facility; and support teens in reaching their goals. Must be able to work shifts on weekends, evenings, and holidays as needed. Some day time and one overnight on call required. Licensing Regulations require Residential Staff to be 21 years of age or older.
Availability:
Must be able to work shifts on weekends, evenings, and holidays as needed. The shifts are between 7 am and 10:30 pm. The position is 40 hours per hours week but could be less (32) if needed.
Primary Duties
A. Guidance and Supervision
· Provide a safe, caring, and trauma-informed environment for all teens
· Respect individual differences and examine how one’s own potential biases may impact the way one relates to the youth
· Responsible for security and cleanliness of facility
· Responsible to know the whereabouts of every teen at all times
· Report to Program Coordinator and Case Manager if there are concerning changes in youth’s behaviors and well-being
· Maintain safe boundaries with teens, between teens, between teens and other volunteers
· Responsible for compliance of state regulations
· Work closely with other volunteers to ensure safety and state guidelines are maintained
· Build and maintain positive connections with youth
· Respect confidentiality of each youth and his/her family
· Report any suspected abuse, exploitation or neglect of youth in consultation with supervisor(s) to Child Protective Services
B. Administrative duties
· Complete shift logs for all teens
· Complete reports as requested by supervisor(s)
· Assist with data entry and filing as needed
· Administer medications as needed
C. Other duties
· Attend and participate in staff meetings
· Be familiar with goals for each teen
· Initiate conflict resolution
· Display positive morale; speak positively and objectively about the agency and its programs
· Attend other meetings and trainings as needed
· Additional duties as assigned
· May fulfill on call duties
Education and Experience
We are looking for someone who understands Trauma Informed Care and someone who has worked with Motivational Interviewing. Absent of this experience, we will consider someone who has educational background or experiences in human services and is eager to learn. Experience working with youth or in a human services field is preferred.
Knowledge and Abilities
· Excellent ability to communicate orally to a wide range of people
· Effective planning and organization skills
· Proven ability to maintain good working relationships with a variety of people and groups
· Ability to learn, affirm, internalize and apply evidence-based approaches
· Working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel.
