Job Description
The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) is a leader in the U.S. Department of Energy’s effort to secure an energy future that is both environmentally and economically sustainable. With locations in Golden, Boulder, Washington D.C., and Alaska, NREL is the primary laboratory for research, development, and deployment of energy-efficient and renewable energy technologies in the United States. The NREL mission is to develop renewable energy and energy efficient technologies and practices, advance related science and engineering, and transfer knowledge and innovation to address the nation’s energy and environmental goals.
NREL is seeking to hire a Research Tech I for its team at the NREL Alaska Campus. Located in the heart of Interior Alaska, Fairbanks is surrounded by mountains, trails, and rivers, as well as vibrant music, culture, and community. With 22 hours of sunlight in the summer and cold, snowy winters, Fairbanks is an outdoor lovers' paradise. The NREL Alaska Team is housed in the farthest-north LEED Platinum building in the world, a living laboratory for solar, geothermal, biomass, thermal storage, and energy efficient technologies. The successful candidate will be responsible for supporting research, development, demonstration and deployment capability through the Alaska Campus.
The successful candidate will be working with the building science and HVAC researchers on laboratory data collection and community implementation projects. The primary responsibilities for this researcher will be:
- Provide installation and set-up support for laboratory experiments to collect data on heat pumps, mechanical systems, and building envelopes;
- Perform equipment maintenance according to testing protocol;
- Data collection in accordance with testing protocols;
- Drafting and editing of sections of data management plans, research reports, and proposals;
- Meet all requirements of NREL’s safety program and incorporate safety considerations into each task;
- Creating and editing educational materials to disseminate knowledge to students, homeowners, Alaska communities, and builders;
- Participating in education and outreach activities such as tours and presentations;
- Other duties as assigned.

Basic Qualifications
High School Diploma or equivalent and 2 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant education/experience. Or, relevant Associate's Degree or certification program of comparable scope or equivalent relevant education/experience. Basic knowledge of the job. Moderate understanding of general job aspects, and some understanding of the detailed aspects of the job. Basic knowledge of research techniques and practices. Basic communication, team and interpersonal skills.

Additional Required Qualifications
- Experience living in or working with rural Alaska communities;
- Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Teams, and Powerpoint;
- Technical writing and editing skills;
- Ability to obtain and hold Institutional Review Board training;
- Ability to learn data collection and laboratory procedures as well as building diagnostic techniques;
- Excellent communication skills for working with diverse audiences via phone and email.
Preferred Qualifications
- Strong working knowledge of basic building science principles;
- Ability to troubleshoot lab experiments after training;
- Excellent time management skills.

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)
Job Profile: Research Technician I CCHRC / Annual Salary Range: $37,600 - $60,000
NREL takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees. In compliance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, a potential new employee’s salary history will not be used in compensation decisions.
