Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
Long term water quality monitoring (Neuse River, Pamlico Sound, FerryMon) and related laboratory analytical activities
Position Summary
This Research Technician fills the need for technical support of UNC’s long term water quality monitoring (Neuse River, Pamlico Sound, FerryMon) and related laboratory analytical activities. The technician’s primary responsibility will be conducting field work, both in North Carolina and other US locations. Accordingly, some travel is expected. Ability to trailer and drive a boat is preferred. There will be some long workday and weekend hours on occasion. The person in this position will also make water quality measurements in both the field and lab using a multi-parameter data sonde coupled to a data logger. Other duties include operating and maintaining lab equipment which includes, but is not limited to, nutrient autoanalyzer, fluorometer, carbon analyzer and scintillation counter. Individuals with working knowledge of these technologies are preferred. Some data analysis and application of simple statistics will be conducted as part of this position. The Technician should have a working knowledge of Excel, Word and Powerpoint. Laboratory safety, policies and procedures are vital to this position. The Research Technician maintains records for the field and lab, works with large datasets and prepares and submits analysis invoices for the UNC-CH Environmental Microbiology Recharge Center. Those with a strong work ethic and ability to work both independently and with others are encouraged to apply. Possibility of this temporary position to become a permanent position after probationary period.
