Job description
The Research Financial Analyst (RFA) position will be a critical member of the Division of General Internal Medicine. The responsibilities of the RFA include, but not limited to, long-range planning and formulating innovative solutions to the full range of grant management problems, which are frequent due to continual program changes, unpredictable fund sources, and a wide network of collaborators internally and externally. The position requires the incumbent to have a variety of highly specialized professional skills in grants, contracts, and financial analyses.
The RFA is responsible for establishing and maintaining standards and procedures for the fiscal and administrative management of extramural and intramural funds in the Division. At the RFA 3 classification, we expect the incumbent to manage a more complex level of contracts and grants. The incumbent will work collaboratively with the DA, Principal Investigators (PIs), the Grants and Proposals Team, and other business entities in the Office of Research and Controller’s Office to facilitate and expedite the process of administering extramural funds for research faculty by reconciling expenses against approved budgets, generating projections based on actual expenditures, preparing the fiscal closing reports and final reconciliation of costs, troubleshooting over expenditures and appropriation issues, working with research faculty for post-award management issues, and other duties as assigned.

Department Description
The Division of General Internal Medicine, within the Department of Medicine (DOM) within the School of Medicine (SOM), has a wide range of clinical, research, and teaching responsibilities. DGIM’s mission is to provide high-quality and accessible clinical care, train future leaders of primary care, and conduct cutting-edge research in the aspects of health outcomes related to socioeconomic and ethnic factors. The Division has over 75 faculty, more than 70 trainees, and 150+ staff members (both Campus and Health) with expenditures of over $33M.
Required Qualifications
- Ability to manage a significant volume of transactions.
- Ability to perform complex financial analysis and customized reporting.
- Demonstrated competence in the use of spreadsheet and database software in financial analysis, fiscal management, and financial reports.
- Ability to maintain independent judgment; strong organization and communication skills; and a customer service focus across broad and diverse subject areas.
- Maintains current knowledge of compliance regulations in all areas of research administration.
- Demonstrated knowledge of generally accepted accounting, fiscal, and reporting principles.
- Demonstrated knowledge of effective grant funding processes, procedures, and techniques
- Strong writing skills in a variety of styles to draft persuasive text for a variety of audiences while ensuring adherence to funding sponsorÆs guidelines.
- Bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, economics, business, or a related area.
- Three (3) or more years of related work experience; and/or an equivalent combination of training/experience in financial management.
Preferred Qualifications
- Thorough understanding of research administration guidelines of Federal and non-Federal sponsors supporting research and educational activities, preferably in a university environment.
- Thorough knowledge of applicable compliance requirements related to use of human or animal subjects in research, financial conflict of interest, biosafety, etc.
- Previous working experience in an academic environment.
