Responsible for planning and running environmental education programs.
Supervision Received: Works under the direction of the Backcountry Program Supervisor and Environmental Education Coordinators.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Teach and interact with children, teens, and adults in a wide variety of programs including, but not limited to, birthday parties, preschool programs, school field trips, youth programs, community programs, scout programs, and events.
- Facilitate a wide variety of lessons or conversations on topics including, but not limited to, local flora and fauna, conservation, pollution, habitats, adaptations, watersheds, climate change, orienteering, and wilderness survival skills.
- Implement educational and fun outdoor nature programs
- Actively interact with and engage program participants for the duration for the program
- Maintain high standards of health and safety and follow all associated policies
- Take and submit pictures and videos to the Outreach Coordinator to reflect the experience guests have in the Backcountry Wilderness Area
- Responsible for setting up and cleaning up all program supplies
- Responsible for the upkeep and organization of all program supplies
- Secures signed liability waivers from all participants before they are allowed to participate in any program
- Communicates with the Education Coordinators after every program as required
- Attends all staff meetings as required
- Work in a team environment with all of the Backcountry Wilderness Area staff to accomplish program goals
- Responsible for the discipline and safety of all participants
- Maintain updated schedule information on When to Work
- Respond to emergency situations
- Maintain a positive attitude during all activities in all weather conditions and situations
- Follow established policies and procedures
- Other duties as assigned and required
- Must be at least 21 years old
- Ability to work a flexible schedule, including days, nights, and weekends
- Must have an interest in, respect for, and ability to work with children, teens, and adults
- Must have a basic knowledge of ecological principles and environmental issues and a willingness to learn more specifics on any given topic as required.
- Previous experience teaching environmental education or science is preferred.
- Have a passion for nature and outdoor recreation.
- Ability to adapt lesson plans and instructions to meet a wide variety of learners.
- Ability to supervise and be responsible for the health and safety of up to 30 children, teens, or adults.
- Strong work ethic and motivation to contribute positively to the Backcountry Wilderness Area at large.
- Strong communication skills with ability to effectively interact with people of all backgrounds.
- Ability to work in a busy environment with many distractions.
- Strong work ethic and a willingness to work until the job is complete.
- Excellent customer service skills and the ability to remain professional and demonstrate good judgement in all situations
- Ability to think on your feet and respond to ever changing outdoor conditions
- Current First Aid and CPR certifications, or ability to obtain before the first day of employment.
- Valid drivers license and a clean driving record.
- Must pass a drug and background check.
Physical and Environmental Standards: Work is performed indoors and outdoors on a regular basis. Must be able to work in an office environment where noise and interruptions prevail. Must also be able to work outdoors in all weather conditions, including adverse weather such as rain, extreme heat, snow, wind, and more. Must be able to walk on uneven terrain for at least three miles at a time and stand for long periods, walk, sit for long periods, crouch, bend, kneel, stoop, reach and lift, push or pull and carry or lift heavy objects up to 60 pounds unassisted. Vision requirements include near and far acuity. Manual dexterity is needed to type, write, use a calculator, and answer the phone. The ability to talk and hear via the telephone and through face-to-face communication is needed.
Education/Experience: Minimum of 3 months full-time, or equivalent part-time, verifiable experience since the age of 18 working in the care and supervision of 4 or more school-aged children.
