The Peer Counselor is responsible for providing trauma-informed peer counseling to individual, couples, and family support as well as facilitating general and specialized support groups for adult and adolescent sexual assault survivors and their significant others. The Peer Counselor works with diverse populations and clients in marginalized communities. In this role counselors provide unconditional positive regard to survivors of violent crime. Help survivors identify coping skills and tools to thrive. We do not provide clinical therapy. Supervision provided for individuals seeking advancement.

  • Provide individual, couples, and family counseling support, as well as facilitate a variety of support groups.
  • Maintain a caseload of clients appropriate to level of employment and program needs.
  • Assess and screen individuals to determine appropriate level of intervention and services.
  • Promptly respond to requests for counseling services and maintain intake and referral records.
  • Participate in regular supervision, consultation, program, and staff meetings.
  • Participate in trainings as a presenter for local and statewide sexual assault coalitions, institutional partners, and other agencies, as assigned.
  • Develop and maintain a network of community members and service providers.
  • Identify and participate in community events, forums, and meetings as necessary to maintain the agency’s awareness of issues impacting residents and the visibility of the agency’s services.
  • Collaborate with staff and leadership in order to enhance the effectiveness of the agency’s services.
  • Maintain accurate records and statistics for intake, counseling, non-client crisis intervention, information/referral, and other services/activities.
  • Provide counseling services at the Coachella office, as well as off-site or at agencies that have agreed to provide a private space for the agency.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Provide on‐call coverage for assigned and rotating shifts as part of the 24‐hour crisis response. This involves evenings and some weekends.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s degree required in social work, counseling, or psychology. Supervision provided for individuals seeking advancement.
  • Experience providing trauma informed services.
  • Bilingual (Written and verbal fluency) in Spanish/English strongly preferred.
  • Excellent presentation skills and ability to facilitating presentations on sexual violence, gender-based violence and violent crime required.
  • Previous experience working on addressing sexual violence/gender-based violence, and working with diverse populations including LGBTQI communities strongly preferred.
  • Completion of a 52-hour Crisis Response Training within 30 days of hire is required; previous completion of the training is very strongly preferred.
  • Flexibility to work some evening and overnight hours required.

Pay: $47,000.00 - $54,000.00 per year
