Hourly/wage positions are not entitled to the State’s benefits package. Positions filled through this recruitment are limited to an average of 29 hours per week and 1,500 hours in a 12-month period.

THIS POSITION WILL BE LOCATED AT OUR CULPEPER DISTRICT OFFICE
COMPLEX.

Culpeper District’s Traffic Engineering Section is seeking a safety conscious Pavement
Marking and Sign Operator to properly install & maintain pavement markings,
pavement messages & other traffic control devices in compliance with the Manual on
Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), Virginia Work Area Protection Manual and
Bridge Specifications. Will perform a combination of skilled equipment operations,
preventative maintenance and manual labor as well as operate various hand and power
tools, bucket trucks, cranes, augers, forklifts and sign measurement devices. Perform
routine preventative maintenance on all equipment utilized and maintains sign inventory
equipment. Interpret roadway plans and sketches for new sign installation to include
adherence to guidelines and policies governing MISS Utility clearances for sign
installations. Prepare and maintain documentation of daily activities. Work with other
operators as needed to install and maintain signs, longitudinal pavement markings and
pavement messages in accordance with the MUTCD, VA Work Area Protection Manual
and Road/Bridge Specifications. Prepare & operate equipment for snow and ice removal
or other types of emergency operations, clear roadways of snow, ice and debris, and
clean up after accidents and/or provide traffic control.

Must be able to become flagging certified upon hire if not already possessed.
This position is designated as essential and, as such, all duties associated with the job
are required during emergency situations which may include but are not limited to
inclement weather, disaster response, and emergency operations. Performance of these
duties may require work outside of normal business hours including nights, weekends
and holidays. VDOT will determine when essential positions are required to report.

Minimum Qualifications

• Experience performing manual labor
• Ability to read and interpret work plans and sketches/specifications; and to follow oral

and written instructions, and complete accurate work documentation and follow oral and
written instructions

• Skill in using hand and power tools
• Experience in general equipment operation
• Valid driver’s license required

Must be able to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License and DOT medical card (minimum
Class B with Air Brake endorsement) within 6 months of employment and maintain
therafter

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience in pavement marking and messaging operations
• Experience in the installation and maintenance of highway signs (metal and wood

structures) and various types of traffic control devices;

• Experience in emergency operations to include snow and ice removal, storms and

debris clean-up;

• Pavement marking certification preferred
• Working knowledge of work zone traffic control standards and techniques
• Current possession of Commercial Driver’s License (minimum Class B with Air Brake

endorsement).
