Nature of Work

Parks/North Bend State Park/Ritchie County - Under general supervision of the North Bend State Park Superintendent, this employee will act as the Assistant Park Superintendent who will assist in the operation of a significantly developed state park, providing services, hospitality and recreational facilities to the public. This individual will be responsible for assisting in the daily operations of a four seasons state park that includes a twenty-nine room lodge; a conference center; a self-operated full-service restaurant and banquet catering operation; year-round cabins; two campgrounds; gift shop, an outdoor pool, nature center, outdoor amphitheater, picnic shelters, a concession operation for bike and boat rentals, as well as a recreational lake, and significant hiking, equestrian and biking trails, including access to the North Bend Rail Trail. This individual will actively assist the Superintendent in order to seek opportunities and solutions in increasing occupancy in the various lodging facilities through the active management of rates and packaging, and work with staff to increase group occupancy and rentals of conference center facilities; will assist in developing creative and enticing overnight lodging packages, promotions and events in order to increase visitation and interest in the park’s amenities and overnight accommodations; work to increase retail revenue and provide quality retail merchandise that is attractive to park visitors; work to increase revenue at the park’s revenue centers; create a culture of providing superior hospitality to park visitors and ensure continued superior hospitality through the training, coaching and motivating of park staff; control expenses, oversee and manage housekeeping standards, hire, train, motivate, and discipline staff; prepare and approve purchases; handle and resolve customer complaints; respond to emergencies; and may be required to perform law enforcement duties. Performs related work as required. Regular attendance is required.

Minimum Qualifications

Training: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
OR
Substitution: Additional experience as described below may be substituted for the required training at a rate of one (1) year of full-time or equivalent part-time paid experience per thirty (30) semester hours of coursework.
AND
Experience: Three (3) years of full-time or equivalent part-time paid experience working at a state park, in a natural resources related field, in the tourism or travel industry, or in the environmental industry, two (2) years of which must have been in a responsible administrative and/or supervisory capacity.

Special Requirement:
Must have a valid driver’s license, and must obtain a valid West Virginia driver's license within six (6) months of employment. May need to successfully complete required Special Natural Resources Police Officer training and pistol requirements as established by the Division of Natural Resources, Law Enforcement Section. May need to pass periodic firearms qualification. May need to pass an initial physical examination, psychological evaluation and a polygraph examination designed to determine applicant's fitness for Special Natural Resources Police Officer enforcement duties.

Other Information

Note: Three (3) years of professional experience and/or military service will be substituted for the specific (preferred) experience listed above.

Pay Differentials:

  • Park Superintendents who serve as Defensive Tactics Training Instructors in the Special Natural Resources Police Officer Program will receive a shift differential of $100 per month effective February 1, 2014.
  • Park Superintendents who are not provided an on-park residence will receive a stipend of $1,000 per month in lieu of housing effective June 1, 2012.
