From its beginning in 1937, Tennessee State Parks were established to protect and preserve the unique natural, cultural, and historic resources of Tennessee. As stewards of the resources in our parks, we seek to manage Tennessee's state parks in order to preserve and protect valued resources and to provide a balance of services and benefits for the enjoyment of the people.

How you make a difference in this role:

The preferred candidate will make a difference by providing cultural resource management of the parks' multiple historic structures including the Carter Mansion, Sabine Hill, and the replica Fort Watauga and surrounding grounds and gardens. The preferred candidate will make a difference by supporting the community outreach programs and partner with local businesses, educational institutions, and area officials to promote the park and impact economic development.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Administer an annual budget of $776,000.
  • Manage 6 full time staff members and 2 job share positions, supporting their growth and development through individual performance plans, training, and evaluations.
  • Participate in the implementation and coordination of polices and initiatives for park operations. Ensure all governing state parks' policies are observed.
  • Work closely with staff and volunteers to develop historic interpretation on and off site including the history of the Sycamore Shoals region, living history programming, and programming focused on the cultural and natural history of the region.
  • Provide oversight, growth, and direction for all operations and amenities within the park including the gift shop, interpretive museum, meeting space and picnic shelter rentals, and walking trails.

Job Overview:

The preferred candidate will work at Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park in Elizabethton, Tennessee. The park protects the land that was the location of several important historical events and sites from the late 18th century including Cherokee settlement, the formation of the Watauga Association, Fort Watauga, and the muster site of the Overmountain Men in 1780. The park also contains recreational opportunities such as the 1.2-mile Patriot Path and fishing along the Watauga River as well as picnic shelters.

Required Experience:

Preferred candidates will have five or more years of natural resource or parks and recreation management experience and a bachelor's degree in History, Natural Resource - Based Management (Natural Resources, Forestry, Wildlife Biology, etc.), Park and Recreation Management or related field. The candidate is required to be a state commissioned officer recognized by the Tennessee Law Enforcement Training Academy or is willing to become commissioned.
