Reports to: Substitute Coordinator
Status: Part-Time & Full-Time Positions Available (During the Academic Year)
Daily Rate: Ranges from $250 - $270 (Non-SpEd) / $265 - $274 (SpEd)
Making Waves Academy offers the following On-Site Substitute position options:
- Part-Time: M/W/F or T/TH/F
- Full-Time: M-F
Position Summary
The role of the On-Site Substitute Teacher, under the direction of the Substitute Coordinator, is to develop and implement effective instruction in the courses they teach that engage students while also creating a safe, supportive, and rigorous learning environment within the classroom which may vary based on the assignment. Making Waves Academy (MWA) onsite substitute teachers are also expected to collaborate with colleagues, and, lesson and unit plan to help students meet and exceed proficiency in content standards based on need. On-Site Substitute Teachers are expected to actively engage and participate in culture building, including but not limited to the classroom, lunch, and recess/break supervision, and hallway norm expectations. On-Site Substitute Teachers are also expected to invest and engage in the work of developing a results-oriented, data-informed, collegial, and productive, team-oriented approach to the work.
Primary Responsibilities
Classroom Management
- Implement teacher lesson plans and ensure students are engaged in learning at all times
- Communicate student progress to the Substitute Coordinator and Instructor
- Employ classroom management techniques in alignment with Making Waves Academy culture, policies, and expectations
- Supervise students to ensure the safety
- Communicate student behaviors requiring follow-up from school leadership and submit to the Substitute Coordinator
- Serve as a Mandated Reporter

- Communicate with, teach and build relationships with students and their families in the culturally and linguistically diverse MWA community
- Collaborate and be a positive “team player” with colleagues, parents and community members to affect the best outcomes for students

- Additional duties as assigned by Substitute Coordinator or designee
Work Environment
This role operates in a fast-paced classroom environment with a need to multi-task. This role routinely uses standard classroom equipment such as laptop computers, photocopiers, whiteboards, and Chromebooks.
Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to adhere to the following:
- Frequently walk across the middle and upper school campus.
- Participate in campus supervision duty each week – Monday through Friday frequency may vary based on the supervision assignment each semester (including eating and common area(s), parking lot(s), and playground)
- Lift files, open filing cabinets, bend or stand on a stool as necessary, and sit for long periods.

Qualifications
Experience
- Substitute teaching experience is highly preferred
- Experience working with students and families from historically underserved communities in an educational setting
Skills
- Strong classroom management skills
- Ability to teach effectively within an ethnically and culturally diverse, student-oriented setting
- Ability to complete tasks and meet deadlines independently
- Excellent communication and organizational skills
- Ability to utilize technology in the classroom
- Must be flexible and adaptable to change
Education
- Bachelor’s Degree required
- Emergency 30-Day Substitute Teaching Permit from California Commission on Teacher Credentialing required
- Meets California Basic Skills Requirement with passing scores or coursework.
