BASIC FUNCTION:

Under the direct supervision of the registered nurse, the OB surgical technologist is an integral part of the surgical team working to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures related to the labor and delivery department. Surgical Technologists’ primary responsibilities are to prepare and maintain the sterile field, pass instruments, and assist the surgeon within their scope of practice. The surgical technologist collaborates with other members of the labor and delivery team to utilize resources in a cost effective manner in an environment that promotes continuous quality improvement.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

Education: High school diploma or equivalent, graduate of an accredited surgical technology program or licensed as a practical nurse (LPN) in New York State.

Experience: Minimum one years’ experience as a surgical technologist or LPN required. Integral components consist of strong interpersonal skills with an emphasis on collaborative team behaviors.

Certification: Holds and maintains a certified surgical technologist or licensed practice nurse credential administered by a nationally accredited organization.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POSITION:

The Surgical Services Licensed Practical Nurse performs the following surgery related tasks and functions:

• Assisting healthcare professionals to prepare the operating room and sterile field for

surgical procedures including assisting healthcare professionals to set up sterile

supplies, instruments and equipment using sterile technique and ensuring that surgical

equipment function properly and safely.

• Assisting healthcare professionals with patient care during the laboring and delivering process, setting up delivery tables, assisting with delivery, ensuring sterile equipment are handled properly

Assisting healthcare professionals to move and position patients for surgery.

• Assisting healthcare professionals to perform non-invasive prepping of the skin’s

surface and draping patients for surgery.

• Assisting the surgeon’s provision of hemostasis during surgery by handing

instruments.

• Holding a retractor after placement by a healthcare professional.

• Anticipating instrument needs of a surgeon.

• Applying wound dressings.

• Demonstrates knowledge of:

o Proper care of surgical instruments

o Methods of sterilization and monitoring methods for sterilization.

o High level disinfection.

• Collects and identifies specimens as directed by surgeon communicating information clearly and completely to RN circulator
• Participates in sponge, sharp, and instrument counts to prevent the retention of unintended foreign bodies
• Assisting with infant circumcisions, as applicable
• Adheres to the policies and procedures as outlined in the exposure control manual: Standard Precautions, Blood Borne Pathogens, Disposal of Sharps, Blood/Body Fluid Spills and Medical Waste Disposal
• Provides individualized patient care accommodating specific needs related to age, religion, culture, and special needs.
• Communicates and relates effectively with patients, families, co-workers, and guests.
• Practices in a manner to support staff and patient safety.
• Promotes cooperation with fellow colleagues within the organization.
• Addresses problem-solving through appropriate channels.
• Actively participates in performance improvement initiatives within the department.
