Axle is seeking a highly ambitious, adaptable, structured, and detail-oriented Scientist to join our vibrant team at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) supporting the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) located in Bethesda, MD.
Overall Position Summary and Objectives
Under this delivery order, the contractor will independently provide support services to satisfy the overall operational objectives of the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development. The primary objective is to provide services for scientific instrumentation.

Work Details:
- Operates laboratory machines and instruments; and prepares specimens and equipment for use.
- Maintain equipment in the laboratory
- Prepare samples for fluorescent and electron microscopy.
- Performs sample management and storage.
- Retrieve, catalog and process samples
- Plan execute and arrange laboratory experiments, new techniques and procedures; and performs laboratory techniques relating to scientific research.
- Trains staff in performing routine laboratory tests and procedures.
- Teach students, postdocs and staff how to use equipment.
- Provides insights and expertise and recommends new strategies and approaches.
- Supports the planning and execution of research experiments in the context of the laboratory's overall research program.
- Perform fundamental procedures required for research projects.
- Perform routine experiments and tests; follow established procedures and protocols.
- Learn new hardware and software quickly to become an expert user for the Cryo-FIBSEM. 2
- Supports laboratory staff on research projects and techniques.
- Work with staff to manage, use and train on instrumentation such as cryo-FIBSEM, cryo plungers, high pressure freezers, electron microscopes (T12, T20, Glacios, Krios) and accessories like pump stations and holders. 1
- Maintains laboratory equipment and the training of others in their use.
- Calibrate, maintain and troubleshoot instruments and equipment in the laboratory. 3
- Prepare samples for fluorescent and electron microscopy. 4
- Monitor and maintain contracts for laboratory equipment and monitor equipment performance and maintenance schedule.
- Assists in maintaining adequate space and facilities for ongoing and projected research studies.
- Upkeep sample and database inventory; monitor overall sample inventory.
- Evaluates, analyzes and interprets research data, communicates results and methods in reports, presentations, and manuscripts.
- Write technical reports and prepare manuscripts.
- Maintain a detailed and up-to-date electronic laboratory notebook detailing all experiments.
- Collect, analyze and interpret data; prepare summaries and reports 5
- Review and summarize literature as requested.
- Attend meetings and present findings/results.

Minimum Education
Master's

- Min. education of Master's degree with at least 1-year hands on experience on Electron Microscopy (EM) and/or Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM).
