SUMMARY

The purpose of the mpox Epidemiology, Surveillance, and Data Team within the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) mpox response is to provide case-based surveillance and receive, maintain, analyze, and disseminate epidemiologic data for mpox cases reported in the state of California. This team works to meet the demands for timely and highly visible surveillance data used by groups at CDPH to track and respond to the mpox outbreak. This team is responsible for accurately reporting cases of mpox and required data elements to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in accordance with the Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists guidance.

The Senior Epidemiologist will lead and oversee the mpox Epi Unit of the Epidemiology, Surveillance, and Data Team. Duties of the Team include overseeing the gathering, linking, reporting, and analyzing of data to understand and disseminate surveillance data to decisionmakers, local health jurisdictions (LHJs), and the public. In addition, the Team will assess clinical, social, and behavioral risk factors contributing to risk of infection, severe illness, and death. The Senior Epidemiologist also collaborates with CDPH colleagues on other mpox prevention and control efforts as needed and contributes to investigating mpox clusters and outbreaks. The Team will also develop guidance around gathering, linking, and reporting of data, as well as guidance for local health departments and the public on mpox prevention and control.

This position is a temporary, grant-funded position through January 2025 but may be extended should funding be available.

Salary Range: $94,800- $111,996 a year

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Lead mpox surveillance to document the impact of mpox on California’s residents and inform statewide surveillance, prevention, and control activities.
  • Gather, analyze, and interpret surveillance data on risk factors for mpox infection and disease outcomes.
  • Analyze vital statistics and other data sources, to examine mpox mortality and morbidity.
  • Provide expertise and support to enhance collection of mpox case data at state and local levels.
  • Serve as Team lead and provide oversight and mentorship to junior team members.
  • Represent the mpox team on calls with CDPH leadership, LHJs, and other stakeholders, including providing presentations to various stakeholder audiences.
  • Develop and write protocols for new projects, including for IRB review and approval.
  • Develop new processes and protocols in collaboration with other team members for complex studies and projects.
  • Make major intellectual contributions to design and analysis of new and ongoing studies that are of large scale or complex nature.
  • Conceptualize, coordinate, and produce reports, data visualizations, and public-facing materials that describe/interpret epidemiologic analysis for the purpose of mpox control and prevention policy in California. Manuscripts may also be produced.
  • Present at scientific conferences, if applicable.
  • Liaise with epidemiology and laboratory partners at CDPH, CDC, academic partners, and LHJs.
  • Collaborate effectively in a team environment.
  • Perform other duties as directed by the Leadership.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

  • Expertise in the fundamentals and principles of epidemiology, biostatistics, and public health; fluent with current, state-of-the-art statistical methods.
  • Experience manipulating public health surveillance data using coding languages such as SAS/R, SQL, and/or Python
  • Experience summarizing epidemiologic data, ideally in infectious diseases.
  • Ability and experience analyzing and interpreting complex data.
  • Experience linking datasets.
  • Ability to translate complex results into prevention recommendations interpretable by a variety of audiences.
  • Ability to write up scientific reports and to orally present results to both a scientific and a lay audience.
  • Knowledge of current developments in public health.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks and work independently.
  • Experience working with LGBTQ+ communities and in sexually transmitted diseases is a plus.
  • Ability to work as part of a team.
  • Fluency in spoken and written English is required.

Education/Experience

  • Completed Ph.D., in Epidemiology or biostatistics, DrPH, or Doctoral degree in related field, preferred.
  • Master’s degree in Public Health with two years of experience supervising an infectious disease surveillance program/team
  • At least two years of experience in public health, required.
  • Knowledge and use of statistical software such as Statistical Analysis Software (SAS) or R, required.
  • Basic knowledge and use of data visualization software such as Tableau, preferred.
  • Previous experience supervising/mentoring/guiding epidemiologists and data scientists
