Overview:
The CSS team implements Aegis’ commercial Space Testing as a Service (STaaS) line of business that customers use to obtain spaceflight heritage for their new products, reduce risk for their new technologies, and conduct basic science in space and on the surface of the Moon. STaaS is enabled by Aegis’ commercial MISSE platform attached to the International Space Station, its M1 Free-flying Satellite Bus and its two lunar surface platforms scheduled for launch in 2024 and 2025.
The materials scientist/engineer who fills this position is responsible for the analytical and physical integration of customer material samples as well as a wide range of other customer experiments such as active sensors, electronics and imaging systems onto MISSE missions to the International Space Station. This position is the primary point of contact for MISSE customers and principal investigators (PIs) during the integration phase of a MISSE mission and the primary MISSE point of contact for NASA for completing a MISSE mission’s ISS integration process.
- Act as the principal point of contact during assigned missions for MISSE customers and Principal Investigators (PIs) for the integration phase of the mission
- Assist MISSE customers and principal investigators ensure that their experiments meet ISS and launch vehicle requirements, are delivered to Aegis on time, can be integrated as planned, and will function as planned on-orbit
- Work closely with the rest of CSS team to coordinate all integration, test, and flight article de-integration activities
- Provide material science expertise to the CSS team and customers during MISSE integration and data delivery
- Design the MISSE carrier layout to ensure that all customer experiments fit and are compatible
- Hands-on work assembling and integrating payload flight hardware, ground support equipment, and conducting functional testing, as required
- Work with the rest of the CSS team to ensure that verification testing, including EMI/EMC, vibration testing, and thermal vacuum testing are carefully planned and correctly executed
- Develop and maintain accurate integration schedules
- Support ISS and launch vehicle integration, perform payload requirements/compatibility assessments
- Ensure that all ISS verification requirements are met and delivered into the system on-time
- Create and maintain project documentation such as interface definition documents, systems requirements, design documents, test plans and procedures, deployment documents, and project presentations
- Lead payload meetings such as Mission Kickoff Meetings and technical interchange meetings
- Support MISSE on-orbit operations as required and monitor conditions of on-orbit experiments
- Lead or assist with mission de-integration and closeout, including return of experiments to customers
- Clear and concise reporting of assigned work tasks and initiatives.

- Extended work schedule may be required

- Bachelor of Science degree in Materials Science and Engineering or another STEM degree with materials experience
- Minimum of five years of experience
- Organized, with strong time management and project management skills. Able to ensure that disparate elements of the integration process come together as planned.
- Excellent interpersonal & relationship management skills, written and verbal communications skills
- Highly dependable, self-motivated, and accountable
- Comfortable working with senior executives, scientists, engineers, and customers
- US. citizen or permanent resident, ability to pass a government background check
- Knowledge of, and experience with, ISS payload requirements and integration/safety processes
- Proficiency in Solidworks or other 3D CAD software highly preferred
- Experience in the commercial space industry and/or human spaceflight industry
- MS or PhD in materials science and engineering
- Knowledge of the low-Earth orbit environment
- Some knowledge of a scripting language (e.g., Python or R) for data analysis
- MS Project experience
