Summary:
Reports to the Director of Medical Engineering, manages the activities of biomedical and patient equipment staff in the testing, maintenance and repair of a wide variety of patient care equipment., including complex state-of-art biomedical equipment. Oversees the medical equipment maintenance program at the Bradley Hospital. Participates in development of policies and procedures and budget planning.

Responsibilities:
Assist in the development, management and evaluation of the Medical Equipment Management Plan approved by the Safety and EOC Committee.
Directs activities of staff in Medical Engineering and Patient Care Equipment functions of the Medical Engineering Department. Interviews and selects staff, assigns work, orients, trains, and evaluates performance; recommends corrective action up to and including discharge as appropriate. .
Participates in the development of hospital and departmental policies and procedures, and assumes primary responsibility for the development and approval of all procedures within
Medical Engineering and Patient Care Equipment functions. Ensures compliance with all policies and procedures by subordinates and that other hospital staff are made aware of such policies as appropriate.
Participates in budget preparation and capital equipment planning and acquisition process. Maintains open communications and effective relationships with equipment vendor to ensure appropriate maintenance of equipment, to report and resolve related issues. Develops and maintains effective relationships with staff and managers in other hospital departments to ensure successful budgeting, evaluation, acquisition, installation, testing, maintenance and repair of equipment.
Prepares, distributes and maintains reports on user errors and equipment problems to comply with standards established by department/hospital quality assurance, Joint Commission, FDA and other related safety regulations and standards. Ensures accurate records are developed and maintained related to clinical equipment inventory, service repair and parts inventory.
Directs the patient care equipment resource functions to ensure medical equipment, accessories, supplies and portable oxygen supplies are available to meet anticipated needs. Manages hospital-wide medical equipment rental activities.
Coordinates the preventive maintenance for equipment under assigned area. Maintains and performs preventive maintenance to ensure the equipment users have complete, effective and efficient service. Ensures electrical safety programs are in compliance with Joint Commission, ANSI, NFPA and AAMI standards. Manages the scheduling and updating of all safety inspections, performance verifications and preventive maintenance.
May perform duties of subordinate staff when required due to absence of any particular technician at a given time. Responds to emergency repair calls for patient-connected life support systems, requiring expeditious analysis and resolution of problem. Interfaces complex medical equipment and instrumentation to be used for the diagnosis and treatment of patients or in research studies.
Reviews pertinent literature and attends seminars to maintain awareness of medical instrumentation innovations, related maintenance techniques, and awareness of the new required standards and regulations.
Provides technical and functional guidance to biomedical equipment technicians by instructing and demonstrating repair and maintenance procedures on new and/or complex state-of-the art medical equipment and instrumentation. Evaluates staff’s abilities to effectively work on equipment and that adherence to established procedures.
Prepares and initiates purchase orders, within level of authority, for outside services to perform repairs and/or purchase required parts; confirms completion of service in accordance with specifications and authorizes payment for same.
Coordinates and tracks service activities of the work group and outside vendors. Assists in tracking outside vendor invoices and expenses, investigating and resolving discrepancies.
Participates as a member of various equipment, safety, user and purchasing committees. Provides assistance in selection process for new equipment by recommending specifications necessary to meet safety standards and regulations.
Participates in development and recommendation of training procedures for the nursing staff and physicians on the proper use of the biomedical equipment and the proper clinical applications.
Assists in special projects such as medical device pre-purchase evaluation, testing, conversion and installation.
Basic Knowledge
Level of knowledge generally obtained through completion of an Associate’s Degree in electronics, electrical engineering or biomedical engineering.
Knowledge of Microsoft Windows and Office applications, maintenance management software package and basic database concept, with ability to create and present data analysis reports in a spreadsheet or word format
Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care patients with consideration of aging processes, human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.
Experience
Five years progressively more responsible related experience required, demonstrating effective managerial, clinical and marketing skills. Such experience should reflect an expansive knowledge of biomedical equipment maintenance and repair, with highly skilled technical knowledge on application and troubleshooting of electrical, mechanical, electronics, microprocessor, and computer-based medical equipment. Preference for specialized skills in ‘High-End” equipment training, including Ultrasound Imaging Systems, Respiratory Ventilators, Anesthesia machines, Patient Monitoring Systems, and other equipment specialties.
Demonstrated supervisory and leadership skills, with effective interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
