Duties

  • Demonstrates proper work methods in operation of mowing and roadside trimming, raking sweeping, fence construction, trail maintenance, and landscaping using walking or riding power equipment.
  • Leads fellow employees in the proper use and operation of riding mowers, power tools and motor vehicles used in grounds, trails, road and landscape maintenance operations.
  • Informs supervisor of status of work and passes instructions received from the same on to other workers, and checks to assure work is being done properly.
  • Leads crew in the proper and safe use of motor vehicles, mowers, chainsaws, string trimmers, trimmers, pruners, etc. Incumbent rakes, sweeps, mows and trims landscaped grounds using walking or riding power equipment up to and including 38HP Hustler riding type tractors, equipped with 60-inch mower decks and bagger attachments.
  • Operates trucks up to five (5) ton capacity equipped with four wheel drive and dump beds with 16 foot trailers.-Performs ground maintenance including, but not limited to, raking roadsides and ditches, patching holes in bituminous paving materials, using both cold and hot mix.
  • Repairs to aggregate lanes using a variety of stone products.
  • Trail repair and construction.
  • Hazardous tree removal, including vista clearing and removal of vegetation. Application of approved chemicals for the control of unwanted vegetation.
  • Leads crew to completion of fence construction and repair of historic and non-historic fence including Virginia worm, post and rail, stake and Ryder, woven wire, barbwire and Australian wire fences.
  • Performs routine preventive maintenance and minor repair of equipment in his scope of operations, including oil changes, blade sharpening, weed eater spool maintenance etc.
  • Collects trash and litter from receptacles at buildings and roadside areas on park grounds as established in the park roadside trash collection plan.

Physical Demands: Moderate to heavy physical effort may be required in operating equipment, in lifting 45-100 pounds (i.e., lifting trash containers, moving tables and benches, loading and unloading cargo, repairing/constructing roads, trails and fences, using hand tools to dig and backfill ditches, etc.). This position is required to walk, climb, bend, crouch, stretch, sit, work in cramped areas, work on ladders/scaffolding, in trees at varied heights, etc.

Working Conditions: The work of this position is performed mostly outdoors, sometimes in dusty, wet, windy conditions, in extreme temperatures occasionally reaching 90 plus degree temperatures with high humidity. Work is performed on uneven terrain and steep slopes presenting a high degree of exposure to potential injury and equipment damage. At times work is performed in an open driver's seat which could expose the operator to exhaust fumes depending on weather conditions. There is a chance of receiving injuries such as broken bones, lacerations, sprains, bruises, etc. There is a chance of receiving long term injuries to joints or muscles as a result of repetitive movements being completed several times a day for several days. Incumbent is exposed to poison ivy, a variety of biting and stinging insects, and occasional reptiles.

  • You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work. This is an alternative work schedule (5,4,9), meaning 9 hrs per day, 5 days the first week of the pay period and 4 days the 2nd week of the pay period or vice versa.
  • Travel is not required.
  • SALARY RANGE: A selectee receiving a first appointment to the Federal Government (Civil Service) is entitled only to the lowest step of the grade for which selected The display of a salary range on this vacancy shall not be construed as granting an entitlement to a higher rate of pay.

To Qualify for the Maintenance Worker Leader, WL-4749-05 position:

You must demonstrate the ability to independently lead a crew to completion of a variety of landscape preservation tasks that include: 1.)Operation of landscape equipment, trucks, trailers, and tractors; 2)trail maintenance; 3)fence repair and construction; 4)trail maintenance; 5)tree removal, 6)construction projects; and 7) leading a work crew. To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors:
