POSITION TYPE AND STATUS:
Long-term Elementary School Counseling Substitute through the end of the school year, June 12, 2023. Jameson Elementary School is a school of 180 +/- students in grades Pre K-2. The successful candidate will work closely with administrators and teaching staff to provide social emotional learning support to students PreK-2. This position assists children and families in receiving services within the school or community that will positively impact educational and personal performance. This position spends approximately 1/2 the day independantly delivering social skills lessons in the classroom as part of a tier 1 school counseling program. The other 1/2 of the day will be spent providing counseling services and supporting students as needed as part of a tier 2 and tier 3 school counseling program.
This position will remain open until a suitable candidate is found.
Located a ½ mile from the Atlantic Ocean and 15 minutes from Portland, RSU 23 is a 700 student, three-school district seeking a long-term elementary school counseling substitute to join our team. The successful candidate should possess the following:
CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
1. A Master’s Degree in Elementary Counseling or similar degree. Those who are in the final semester of obtaining their degree may also be considered.
2. Must hold or be eligible for a valid State of Maine certificate in counseling (075). For those who are near completion of their degree program a valid Criminal History Records Check through the Maine Department of Education is required.
QUALIFICATIONS / JOB SUMMARY:
1. Responsible for the planning and performance of counseling services within Jameson School for grades PK-2 in collaboration with teachers and administrators. This includes curricular materials for direct instruction which meets learning objectives.
2. Ability to communicate effectively and work cooperatively with students, families, staff, and the community.
3. Provide short-term individual and group counseling for students when appropriate. Will be available to students for self-referrals and referrals from staff, families, and others.
4. Provide and follow programs for students, within the classroom or small group context, which help students with their own social and emotional development. (I.e., second step)
5. Provide crisis intervention for students when the occasion(s) arise.
6. Consult in a positive and collaborative manner with families, faculty, administrators, and other professionals regarding students.
7. Counselors shall adhere to the Code of Ethics sanctioned for school counselors by the The American School Counselors’ Association.
8. Assists new students in adjusting to school.
9. Counsels students on educational and/or personal problems.
