Light Equipment Operator

Primary Responsibilities:

Under supervision of the O&M Superintendent, operates light equipment as necessary for

construction, repair, and maintenance projects. Will assist with other general maintenance work and activities as needed.

Typical Duties:

Operates at least two of the following light construction equipment pieces and associated implements, including the loader, wheel tractor, backhoe, trencher, spray trucks, and dump trucks;

assists in the routine maintenance and servicing of such equipment; logs fuel usage and other necessary record-keeping of construction equipment operation; uses all other materials and miscellaneous equipment for repair and maintenance projects; may work as a Ditch Tender during irrigation run seasons, and additional duties as prescribed by management.

Education and Experience:

Graduation form high school is desirable but sufficient work-related experience can substitute therefor; prior experience and exposure to light equipment operation and maintenance desirable; possession of California Class A driver’s license.

Knowledge and Skills:

Knowledge of construction equipment mechanics, limitations, applications, and safety considerations and requirements; skilled in the efficient operation of light equipment on water system repair and maintenance projects; ability to operate construction equipment adjacent to water canals, ditches or regulation facilities; willingness to operate construction equipment during emergencies for the repair of channels and canals to prevent flooding and restore water service; ability to perform and understanding of preventative maintenance practices as applied to construction equipment; ability to maintain accurate written records related to construction equipment operation and transport; familiarity with general construction project materials and miscellaneous equipment applications; ability to work effectively with other maintenance workers in a team-oriented fashion. This is a Safety Sensitive Employee position as defined in Policy No. 1245.

Ditch Tender

Primary Responsibilities:

Under direction and supervision of the Watermaster, to control water flows to/from the canal and pipeline conveyance system in a manner to balance daily supplies with requested deliveries from water users.

Typical Duties:

Logs, and incorporates into canal operations, daily water order changes of the assigned service area as furnished by the Watermaster; operates all intake, diversion (turnout), regulation basin, check, and water measuring structures in the canal and pipeline system within the assigned service area; records all diversions and other pertinent flow information on a daily basis; reports the daily status of the canal and regulation basin operations (flows and stages) to the Watermaster; patrols the canal system within assigned service area for any diversions not consistent with water orders, bank stability, weed growth, and debris accumulation; informs the Watermaster or O&M Superintendent of any noted canal or ditch bank or turnout maintenance needs; is responsible for any routine maintenance needs of all diversion and check structures within the assigned service area; is on call on a 24-hour basis to respond to operational emergencies; may work in the maintenance department at times when an irrigation run is not ongoing., and additional duties as prescribed by Management.

Education and Experience:

Graduation from high school is desirable but sufficient work-related experience can substitute therefore; sufficient mathematical abilities to record and account for canal system water orders and flow adjustments; experience with controlling water flows in an open-canal, gravity system; possession of California Class C driver’s license.

Knowledge and Skills:

Organizational skills to log and record numerical water flow and quantity information; knowledge and familiarity with basic open-channel hydraulics governing flows and water levels; knowledge of water measurement practices and procedures for flumes, weirs, and turnout structures; willingness to work long hours and for extended periods of time including weekends and holidays; ability to use time efficiently; ability to maintain rapport with water users concerning farm irrigation needs and limitations; possession of basic maintenance skills using hand tools and other maintenance equipment; acceptance of seasonal nature of ditch tending duties and willingness to undertake general maintenance and repair duties during off-season periods.

Job Types: Full-time, Temporary

Pay: $20.00 - $24.00 per hour
