The Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) is recruiting for an ITS Technician III. The ITS Technician IIIis the advanced /lead worker level of technical support work installing, repairing, maintaining, programming and modifying devices and equipment associated with intelligent transportation systems (ITS), traffic control systems, wireless communication technologies and networks. Employees in this class are assigned work in specialized units such as Communications or Traffic Operations in order to maintain the unit's transportation related electronic devices and equipment. Employees in the Communications Unit install, maintain, and program devices and equipment such as, but not limited to, digital microwaves, base stations, portable radios, automatic traffic recorders, closed circuit cameras, wireless transmitters and receivers, two-way mobile communication systems, and weather monitoring devices. Employees in the Traffic Operations Unit install, maintain, and program devices and equipment such as, but not limited to, dynamic message and electronic signs, weigh stations, speed detection sensors, pavement imbedded sensors, paging and public address systems, noxious gas analyzers, telemetry /fiber-optic signal systems and other electrical components. Employees may be assigned an area or district within the State for which they serve as the point-of-contact for this work. Employees at these levels do not supervise other employees, but provide guidance and training as well as assign, review and approve the work of less experienced employees.
Employees receive general supervision from an ITS Technician Supervisor or other designated supervisor.
Employees in this class are considered essential employees and may be required to work rotating shifts, to include weekends, evenings, and nights. In the event of emergency highway conditions, employees are subject to emergency callback during scheduled off-hours.
Work is performed outdoors in all weather conditions and may involve working on roadways, near high-volume traffic, and from bucket trucks. Employees are required to wear protective equipment such as safety vests, steel-toed boots, fall arrest harnesses, and helmets. Employees may be exposed to high voltages. Some heavy lifting of at least 75 pounds may be required. Extensive travel around the state may be required; employees in certain positions must be available to travel to meet the operational needs of the organization.
The current vacancy exists at the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA ITS Division) in Catonsville, Maryland (Baltimore County) and will be responsible for devices located in the Western Counties (Allegheny, Garrett, Washington, Frederick, Howard, and Carroll). The resulting list of eligible candidates may be used to fill future ITS Technician III vacancies throughout MDOT.

Education: Graduation from a standard high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.
Experience: Three years of experience installing, repairing, maintaining, programming and modifying devices and equipment associated with intelligent transportation systems, traffic control systems, wireless communication technologies and networks.
1. Employees in this classification are assigned duties that require operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties must possess a Class C motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland, and may be required to possess a Commercial Driver’s License valid in the State of Maryland.
2. Employees may be assigned duties that require possession of a FCC General Radiotelephone Operator’s License (GROL) or equivalent certification depending on their job assignment. Equivalent certification to the GROL includes Association of Public Safety Communications Officer Radio Technician Certification, Personal Communications Industry Association certification or National Association of Business and Education Radio License certification. Employees possessing such should list the license number and date of issuance on the application.
3. When applicable, employees in the ITS III classification must have satisfied the Administration's training and certification program requirement for the ITS II classification.
