Your Opportunity

Stantec has an opportunity for a talented and ambitious Intermediate Marine Scientist to participate and help lead our client programs. The position will be located in one of our many California offices and will focus on projects throughout the western United States, although opportunities exist to support marine projects in other geographies as well. The ideal candidate for this position is one with experience developing regulatory applications in various marine, with strong literature review, interpretation and writing abilities. Working in a team environment, the successful candidate will be responsible for leading and contributing to environmental assessments and environmental permitting activities for a variety of marine projects. Projects may include Endangered Species Act (ESA) Biological Assessments and Section 7 consultations, Essential Fish Habitat (EFH) assessments, National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) Environmental assessments, permitting and monitoring reports in compliance with the Marine Mammal Protection Act, review of benthic habitat survey reports, and involvement in offshore energy program permitting and associated technical studies.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Promote a strong health and safety culture and actively participate in Stantec’s Health, Safety, Security and Environment (HSSE) Program.
  • Participate in marine resources projects including as a primary author and/or discipline lead on environmental assessments, monitoring programs, and permit applications.
  • Assist in the development of technical proposals, reports, studies, and regulatory approval applications.
  • Participate in client and regulatory communication and business development.
  • Complete tasks according to approved scopes of work, on schedule, and on budget.

Qualifications

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • Proficient in policies and procedures for HSSE, including client-specific training as necessary.
  • Ability to work independently and in a collaborative team environment and under tight deadlines.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and solve problems proactively.
  • Working knowledge of current state and federal government regulatory requirements, particularly with respect to marine resources, impact assessments, and permitting.
  • Proven technical, communication, writing, and organization skills.
  • Proficient in MS Office applications.
  • Secondary experience with projects related to freshwater habitat, coastal engineering, and/or terrestrial assessments (e.g., vegetation, wildlife, birds, wetlands) or other biological disciplines is an asset.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor or graduate degree in marine/aquatic biology, marine/aquatic ecology, or a related discipline from a recognized university or equivalent experience
  • Minimum of five years’ experience, which may include a combination of post-graduate educational experience.
  • Previous consulting experience is considered a strong asset for this role.

Work Environment

Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather. Ability to lift and move items and equipment up to 50 lbs.

Pay transparency laws require employers to provide the following information for positions that may be in the following jurisdiction(s):

Salary Range(s):

  • $70,600 - $102,400 (CA, CO locations only)

The final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. At Stantec certain roles are bonus eligible.
