FULL-TIME (7 hours/day) positions available throughout the Columbus City School district in:

JOB DEFINITION:

PEAK Instructional Assistant (Positive, Efforts, Adjustment, and Knowledge) assists and supports the classroom teacher in carrying out the daily objectives of the PEAK Center. Assists the classroom teacher in devising special strategies for reinforcing material and skills based on Page 3 sympathetic understanding of individual students, their needs, interests and abilities. Alerts the classroom teacher to any relevant information which best serves the individual student. Coordinates and assists the learning assignments for the student in the PEAK Center room with the regular classroom teacher. Maintains an academic folder and records on each student enrolled in the PEAK Center.

Examples of Work:

· Assists with teaching activities in the classroom

· Assists teachers in the preparation of instructional and audio-visual materials

· Establishes rapport with the parents/guardians and community members

· Assists in the supervision of student behavior

· Attends required professional development sessions

· Assists in the reinforcement of discipline procedures

· Conducts individual and small group activities

· Alerts the classroom teacher to any needs or relevant information which best fits the individual student

· Assists children in developing skills of independence (including diapering and toilet training) in all areas of self-help

ELIGIBILITY:

Applicants must meet one of the following three criteria:

1.) Possess an Associate Degree (or higher) from an accredited institution of higher learning, Or

2.) Possess at least 48 semester hours or 72 quarter hours from an accredited institution of higher learning, Or

3.) Pass the Ohio Department of Education approved Parapro examination administered by the Educational Testing Service (ETS) and possess a high school diploma or GED recognized by the Ohio Department of Education.

*Original diplomas, transcripts and Parapro results must be presented for verification by the Classified Office of the Human Resources Department.

Desired knowledge, skill, and abilities:

  • An applicant must possess a strong desire and willingness to assist teachers and administrators in serving a diverse student population.
  • An applicant must have the ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, co-workers and supervisors.
  • An applicant, if hired, must obtain an Educational Aide Permit from the Ohio Department of Education.
