The Opportunity
WSDOT is seeking to fill two non-permanent Highway Maintenance Worker 2 positions within the Work Zone Traffic Control Crew out of Vancouver, WA. The selected candidates will work on a crew responsible for performing traffic control and be responsible for the set up and removal of all types of traffic control required for maintenance and emergency operations. The types of traffic control consist of long term, short term, stationary, and mobile operations. In addition, these positions will assist other region wide crews in maintaining signs, durable pavement markings, and striping. You may also work with general maintenance operations on other roadway and roadside maintenance activities, and assist with snow and ice control, as well as clean up during and from a storm event. While reporting to the Vancouver Maintenance Facility, you will work throughout the Southwest Region, which often requires travel with overnight stays. We are looking for self-motivated individuals who are mechanically inclined and enjoy the outdoors.
What to Expect
These positions work a 4/10 schedule, Monday-Friday, with opportunity for overtime. Travel is an expectation of the position and may be required on a regular, sporadic, or as needed basis. Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, you will:
Design and set up traffic control for all operations as well as full road or bridge closures according to departmental and MUTCD standards.- Follows safety rule and regulations on all work zone and flagging sites including placing signs barricades traffic cones and other warning devices.
- Perform traffic control such as manually flag traffic or signing for lane closures, road closures, and detours.
- Conduct moving and stationary traffic control operations using attenuator/buffer truck.
- Perform maintenance activities including but not limited to third party damage repair, thermo-plastic, asphalt paving & patching.
- Assist crews in general roadway maintenance activities such as:
- Haul materials and supplies.
- Drainage maintenance including catch basins, sedimentation facilities, and ditches.
- Erosion and slide repair.
- Sign maintenance and repair.
- Guardrail, fence, and impact attenuator installation and repair.
- Operate Class A, B, or C equipment for maintenance operations.
- Conduct snow and ice operations.
- Chemically and manually control vegetation.
- Learn, contribute, and participate in a strong culture of safety in the workplace; Actively participate in daily pre activity safety plans, tailgate safety meetings, and monthly safety meetings.
- Perform maintenance and minor repair on equipment and hand tools.
- Effectively use radio, phone, computers, and electronic devices to communicate and document data.
- Negotiate rough and steep surfaces during the performance of job tasks.
- Respond to call out emergency’s day, night, weekends, and holidays as needed.
Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:
- At least one (1) year of experience performing roadway maintenance, heavy equipment operations, or related experience such as the farming, timber operations, or construction.
- Possession of a Class A CDL with N endorsement without air brake restrictions.
- Obtain and/or maintain valid certifications in Flagging within 6 months of hire.
- The ability to travel to locations outside of the Vancouver area, including overnight stays and extended working hours.
- Ability to report in service to assigned duty station, within 45 minutes of an after-hours call.
- Ability to work nights, weekends, holidays, and perform emergency call-outs/stand-by.
- Basic computer skills to receive and send email, use the Internet, and enter information into computer programs, forms, and mobile technology devices.
- Ability to relocate tools, equipment, and materials weighing up to 50lbs from one location to another in safe manner.
- Skills to communicate effectively with diverse groups utilizing oral, written, and electronic communication methods.
It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
- High school graduation, or possession of a GED certificate, or equivalent.
- Two years of experience in planning, setting signs and devices, flagging, and performing other types of traffic control on multi-lane, high speed, highway.
- Two years as a Highway Maintenance Worker 1 or comparable work experience such as performing roadway maintenance, heavy equipment operation, or related experience such as farming, timber operations, or construction.

- These are non-permanent opportunities, expected to last 12 months.
