Job Description
NREL’s Communications Office has an opening for a Group Manager to lead the Corporate Communications team. Corporate Communications advances the lab’s mission with its work supporting laboratory strategy, executive communications, media relations, social media, events and visits, community relations, internal communications, crisis communications, marketing and branding support, editorial content, and website management.
The position will:
- Hold responsibility and maintain oversight for overall internal and external communications and outreach products, activities, and approaches related to the NREL corporate, executive, and operational presence and functions.
- Have line management duties for approximately five direct reports and overall leadership responsibility for approximately 40 employees.
- Oversee all personnel actions with the group, including hiring and ongoing performance management.
- Have responsibility for coaching and mentoring, professional development, and conflict resolution.
- Oversee a full range of activities and staff with diverse backgrounds and skillsets.
- Identify opportunities and work to instill a culture that identifies opportunities and supports innovative ideas and processes, open communication, and collaboration across communications groups.
- Guide direct reports on resource management and prioritization of assignments within and across teams.
- Serve as a Communications Office Leadership Team partner to drive overall office operating decisions as well as a visionary future.
- Provide expertise and partner with group and office leadership to oversee the quality of outgoing deliverables.
- Ensure the team’s awareness of the latest technologies, tools, and methodologies, and develop strategies on when and how to implement them.
As part of the Communications Office leadership team, the position will coordinate with the Office Director and other group managers to lead and manage the office, including:
- Developing and implementing office strategies.
- Planning, managing, and reporting on office and group budgets.
- Determining and executing office-wide guidelines, expectations, and policies.
- Providing oversight on group performance management and personnel issues; collaborating with other leaders to resolve conflicts across groups.
- Representing the office leadership team by contributing to and being visibly present in leadership team meetings, office All-Hands meetings, and other staff engagement events and activities.
- Ensuring timely and accurate office-wide communications (emails, blog, Teams posts, etc.).
- Sharing information and working collaboratively throughout all levels of the organization.
In addition to management responsibilities, this position will complete complex projects with high impact and visibility and ensure completion of urgent, sensitive, and strategic ad-hoc requests.

Basic Qualifications
Previous management, budget development and/or significant leadership in an individual contributor role required. Degree in appropriate field is required. Demonstrated skill in dealing with legal and ethical management issues and practices. Broad and in-depth knowledge of the issues and best practices in the applicable field of expertise. Excellent organization, project management, budgeting, interpersonal and communication skills. Proven problem-solving and negotiation skills. Ability to collaborate with individuals at all levels of the organization. Demonstrated ability to effectively lead and direct personnel with diverse skills, work styles and values, both directly and through subordinate management.
- Must meet educational requirements prior to employment start date.
Additional Required Qualifications
- A bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, or related field and at least 5 years of experience in progressively responsible roles. A combination of education and experience may be considered. A minimum of 3 years of management, leadership, and budget development experience.
- Demonstrated skill in dealing with legal and ethical management issues and practices.

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)
Job Profile: Manager III / Annual Salary Range: $111,600 - $200,900
NREL takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees. In compliance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, a potential new employee’s salary history will not be used in compensation decisions.
