Southwest Virginia Community College (SWCC) offers career-training programs in numerous technical, industrial and medical fields at a reasonable cost, going so far as to even waive tuition for certain eligible students. Located in Richlands, Virginia, SWCC offers associate’s degrees in such fields as business, education, general studies, liberal arts and science. These degrees are primarily intended for students who wish to transfer to a four-year university. SWCC also has associate’s degrees that feature programs intended to lead directly to a career in fields such as Nursing, Radiography and Administration of Justice.
Southwest Virginia Community College is seeking an individual to fill the role of FastForward/G3 Career Coach in Workforce Development and Continuing Education.
The FastForward/G3 Career Coach will assist students interested or enrolled in non-credit workforce training with career and educational planning services, program admissions, financial aid, successful training and credential completion, identifying work-based learning opportunities, and job placement and retention. Coaches will assist students in overcoming barriers to their success by connecting them to supportive services in their region, including the services of the one stop career centers, as appropriate. The coach will work closely with students before, during, and after their training and credentialing programs to provide support throughout the program and into the workforce.
Workforce career coaches will be expected to participate in regular, ongoing professional development offered by the VCCS system office, in both online and face-to-face formats, at times and dates to be announced.
- Outreach to individuals who indicate interest in FastForward and G3 Programs
- Provide career assessments
- Develop individual action plans
- Use EAB Navigate for case management of students
- Assist students with job search, resume writing, interview, and professional soft skills
- Communicate and build networks with a variety of workforce partners and stakeholders
- Work with employers for job referrals, work experience or placement
- Connect students with workforce development programs (e.g. WIOA, RVHI) and credentials
- Connect students with SNAP 50/50 AND Single Stop, when eligible
- Understand and use labor market information in order to assist students with making career decisions
- Connect students with resources including financial aid (e.g., WCG, FANTIC) and supportive services
- Ensure scope of work honors our commitment to DEI principles.
This is a grant-funded position.
- Bachelor’s degree in related field or a combination of equivalent education and experience
- Knowledge of student barriers and current evidence-based solutions
- Experience working with diverse individuals and groups

- Demonstrated proficiency using Office 365, Google Workspace, Zoom, Teams, EAB Navigate and Canvas.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team environment
- Desire to learn and grow as a professional
- Valid driver's license with own transportation
- Completed Virginia Career Coach Certification or able and willing to complete the Virginia Career Coach Certification Program after employment
- Experience using Google Workspace, EAB Navigator and PeopleSoft SIS
- Work experience in a higher education, academic/career coaching, or academic advising is preferred
- A Master’s Degree in a related field
