Flower Gardener – James Monroe’s Highland
James Monroe’s Highland is the home site of the fifth President of the United States, and is owned and operated by William & Mary. The work location is James Monroe’s Highland, in Charlottesville, Virginia (Albemarle County).
Do you love tending flower beds and tidying up garden spaces in a beautiful setting? James Monroe’s Highland seeks a part-time, seasonal Gardener specializing in flower bed care. The flower gardener will cultivate Highland's gardens with appropriate plants, planting and caring for them with watering, weeding, pruning, dividing, mulching, and cut-in edging. The flower gardener works in concert with the Buildings and Grounds Superintendent to select cultivars and plant them at the appropriate time and in the right locations. The gardener will prune and fertilize shrubs. The gardener may be asked to assist the groundskeeper(s) with grounds maintenance clean up especially after storm events. The flower gardener will interpret the Highland gardens to the public as needed. This is a six-month position.
COMPETENCIES:
- Effective interpersonal and communication skills with the ability get along with others.
- Ability to operate powered and manual garden equipment.
- Ability to stand or kneel for extended periods of time, and tolerate frequent bending.
- Ability to work effectively in hot or cold weather.
- Ability to tolerate removing poison ivy and other noxious plants if necessary.
- Ability to work from a task list provided.
- Ability to apply pesticides and herbicides (natural pest control preferred).
EDUCATION:
High School Diploma or equivalent.
EXPERIENCE:
- Knowledge of basic horticultural practices.
- Previous experience in planting and maintaining flower gardens.
- Some experience with shrub and small tree care.
- Knowledge of historic plants and cultivation practices preferred.
- Interest or experience in interpreting the historic landscape or gardens to the public.
