Position Summary:
We seek a Research Technician II to join a dynamic and growing team at the Walter Reed Biosystematics Unit (WRBU) Entomology Branch. The WRBU is focused on providing accurate morphological and molecular identification services, and developing identification and vector risk assessment tools for utility on a global stage. The Walter Reed Biosystematics Unit (WRBU) is a unique national resource for biosystematics research on medically important arthropods, and serves to maintain the U.S. mosquito collection, housed within the Smithsonian Institution National Museum of Natural History (SI-NMNH). The purpose of the WRBU is to conduct laboratory and field biosurveillance research on the systematics of medically important arthropod species and species groups in support of epidemiological studies and disease control strategies of importance to the military. The WRBU is focused on providing identification services and developing identification and vector risk assessment tools that support vector-borne disease mitigation efforts worldwide. Products and services are targeted to support ongoing or potential DoD missions, while fostering the interagency relationship between the WRAIR and SI-NMNH. WRBU provides taxonomic expertise support to tri-service forces, and research efforts are carried out worldwide, with regionalization or faunistic restrictions dictated by military priority.

Responsibilities:
Duties include, but not limited to:
  • Support research on arthropod vectors of diseases of military and public health importance.
  • This position will support WRBU research projects using data management and geospatial analysis capabilities.
  • The contractor will provide support to a network of global arthropod vector surveillance efforts and maintain an integrated workflow for preserving data within WRBU’s digital repository, VectorMap.
  • The contractor shall source, evaluate, and standardize published vector collection records from the literature and public data repositories for inclusion in the repository as well.
  • The contractor will maintain and continuously develop knowledge of data collection and standardization techniques related to geospatial field data and provide guidance to partners on how to improve data capture.
  • The contractor will be responsible for generating data visualizations and analyses on demand, specifically field data collection maps, ecological niche models, spatiotemporal estimates of vector activity, surveillance gap analyses as well as other partner-requested products to support the development of vector-borne disease risk assessments.
  • The contractor will serve as the primary point of contact for the VectorMap program, interfacing with external partners and the public.
Qualifications:
Minimum Required Qualifications:
Citizenship: Must be a US citizen
Clearance : NACI (able to obtain)
Education: BS in a biological science
Experience: At least four (4) years of experience
  • Experience with rearing and maintaining colonies of field collected arthropod vectors to support research.
  • Ability to identify field collected arthropods to the genus and species level.
  • The contractor will be experienced in Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI) Geographic Information System (GIS) software including ArcPro, ArcOnline, StoryMap, and ArcExperienceBuilder.
  • Additionally, the contractor will have experience with various ecological niche modeling techniques including Maximum Entropy (MaxEnt) and Boosted Regression Trees (BRT).
