Idaho National Laboratory’s (INL) Reactor Project Engineering group is seeking forward-thinking professionals interested in exploring a career as a Electrical Engineer.

Responsibilities Include:

The Materials and Fuels Complex (MFC) at the Idaho National Laboratory (INL) is seeking applicants for an Electrical Engineer to provide design and system engineering within a group reporting to the Reactor Project Engineering Department Manager.

INL is recognized as the lead national laboratory for DOE-NE, providing much of the nuclear research, development, and demonstration capability needed to move nuclear innovation forward to deployment. MFC hosts a unique combination of personnel, facilities and infrastructure and offers the ability to perform research and development of nuclear fuels from fuel design, development and fabrication through post irradiated analysis. INL is applying the research knowledge learned during the development of accident tolerant fuels in the development of the next generation reactors and micro-reactors.

The electrical engineer applies engineering knowledge, practice and techniques to solve applied and operational problems with facility electrical and instrumentation control systems (including but not limited to reactor protection systems, MCC equipment, motor controls, uninterruptible power supplies, variable frequency drives, PLCs, building management systems, communications, and other control systems used for research applications), and in the areas of R&D for Nuclear Programs, National and Homeland Security, and Energy and Environment. The electrical engineer must be able to work independently as well as part of a group to ensure accuracy and timeliness of work completion. They must be capable of collaborating with various work groups including maintenance and operations staff and may mentor junior engineers and may also assist the department manager in assigning work to others within the group. The Candidate must be able to apply sound knowledge of electrical engineering principles and practices in a broad array of assignments related to electrical and instrumentation control systems. They will perform design of electrical equipment and systems, assist in developing and reviewing potential electrical projects, and oversee engineering support during electrical project implementations.

Functions

Additionally for all functions listed below the electrical engineer supports other staffs within the group performing these same functions.

  • Perform System Engineering role for modifications to assigned existing electrical systems and development of new system capabilities
  • Perform Design Engineer role for modifications
  • Configuration Management
  • Equipment Maintenance
  • Monitor Performance
  • Failure Analysis
  • Operations Support

Minimum Requirements:

  • PR0200/PR0300 - BS degree in Electrical Engineering and 2-5 years’ experience or an MS degree in Electrical Engineering and 1-3 years’ experience or a PhD in Electrical Engineering and 2 years’ experience
  • Must be a US Citizen and have the ability and willingness to obtain and maintain a DOE “Q” Clearance
  • Experience with the design and maintenance of electrical systems for commercial and industrial applications. Knowledge of building automation and controls systems
  • Working knowledge of NFPA 70E Fundamentals including, breaker and electrical equipment maintenance, short circuit calculations, and code compliance calculations

Preferred Requirements:

  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with accurate attention to detail
  • Knowledge of the design and installation of MCC equipment, motors, motor controls, building and plant power systems
  • Understanding of applicable NFPA 70E, and National Electrical codes
  • Experience with configuration management of drawings and engineering documentation
  • Working knowledge of power engineering and control systems
  • Electrical drawings and drawing symbols
  • Basic understanding of practices and techniques to lead in developing designs for new or remodeled facilities, processes and/or utilities

Preferred Skills

  • Knowledge of the design of reactor protection systems
  • Experience with operation of variable frequency drives and communication systems
  • Basic knowledge of building management systems and instrument and control of HVAC units
  • Basic knowledge control systems used in the nuclear industry; a knowledge of reactor instrumentation is desired
  • Experience with CAD programs and digital engineering tools

  • Salary Grade: 210 ($93,492 - $154,212) / 220 ($107,520 - $177,336)
